I like how it says with perfect behavior they can rise again, but then ends with the line that "Their fates are completely predetermined" indicating that there is no such thing as free will.
I guess it means if they're doomed to die by yak hoof, that's determined. All that matters is how they act on the way. Perfect dorfs linger on, good dorfs get eaten by the spirit of hunger, bad dorfs go to the wild world.

Death is followed by a distinct sound. Like...some kind of comic 'boing' I guess.
I wasn't complaining at all. The same conundrum comes up with real world religions too. Why bother with a universe if you are all knowing anyway? I am not digging at religion here because I understand there are deeper meanings once you go beyond the surface.

I just thought it was a quirky bit of dwarf fortress humor that makes the game unique. That being said, my post, your response, and this follow-up response were probably all inevitable ^_^

The Puritans were strict Calvinists, or followers of the reformer John Calvin. Calvin taught that God was all-powerful and completely sovereign. Human beings were depraved sinners. God had chosen a few people, "the elect," for salvation. The rest of humanity was condemned to eternal damnation. But no one really knew if he or she was saved or damned; Puritans lived in a constant state of spiritual anxiety, searching for signs of God's favor or anger. The experience of conversion was considered an important sign that an individual had been saved.

Puritan dorfs.

I might be misinterpreting something, but according to that legend, the souls merges with The Spirit of Hunger only if the dwarf is physically fit?

That's hilarious!

Bad dwarves taste bad, perfect dwarves are tasteless. Only good fit chewy dwarves can satisfy the Spirit of Hunger.
