What is the" myth generator"?
« on: March 03, 2016, 09:39:32 pm »

When I read the Future of the Fortress talks, it sometimes refers to something called the myth generator that has something related magic and deities. However I cant seem to find a definitive statement on what the "myth generator" is and its role in future DF builds(or the current one? havent played in a couple months, just getting back into it).

Does anyone know, or is it something that will be announced later?

Also hi DF forum, its nice to meet you o/

The next big arc is due to introduce world creation myths and expand on Gods, artifacts and magic (and the origins of animal people and probably a whole lot of other stuff). Toady's mentioned it a few times, and apparently has some kind of talk event on it scheduled this month which will probably go into a lot more details.

Stuff mentioned so far:
World creation (unique for each world)
Versions of world creation invented by different civs
A big shake up of Fun spoiler stuff
Npc made artifacts
Magic
Possibly sliders on how 'magical fantasy' you want your world (although I'm not sure if that's directly 'myth generator' or not.)
There are also hints in the planning notes on expanding villains motives (come to steal your artifact socks)

Anyone want to add anything else?

--edit Short version: A worldgen plugin that will generate mythology. Not included yet.

I wouldn't call it a plugin, since it'll be a full part of DF, but rather an extension or upgrade.
One thing mentioned regarding sliders is the idea that you'd be able to determine how much deities influence the world, where one end is a world where deities basically are a figment of peoples imagination without any real world effects (the current state, in practice), with the other end being deities messing around with the world on a daily basis (but probably not to the extent that they'll manifest physically).

I'm not sure some of the adventure mode motives will happen in the myth arc, the starting scenarios, or a different one, though.

Yeah, 'plugin' probably isn't the best word. But 'another upgrade to worldgen' takes away some of the mystique of the 'myth generator'.

Well, it is a generator of myth, not a mythical generator...
Regardless, interesting stuff (and bugs) will undoubtedly come out of it.

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev.html has a roadmap of upcoming development features, so you can see some of the intended future direction there.  Toady doesn't always adhere strictly to what's on that page, though.

Mind you, that page doesn't mention the myth generator at all since the next couple of main sections (NPC artifacts and fortress starting scenarios) haven't been updated since Toady started working on the myth generator. It'll be part of the artifact update, though.

I don't know if the GDC plans to release the entire Practices in Procedural Generation talk, but there is a short promo available.

PWDF's definitely gonna need an overhaul if this doesn't become the next frontier of DF bugs.

Holy shit in that mythology the dwarves literally forged the moon under the direction of their creator, then broke the instrument of their creation and were cursed with mortality.

It doesn't say what Kygedon's deal is, though. They're not mentioned until the rebellion.

I believe that's only showing the beings/events directly related to dwarves, not the entire mythgen.

I like how it says with perfect behavior they can rise again, but then ends with the line that "Their fates are completely predetermined" indicating that there is no such thing as free will.

I guess it means if they're doomed to die by yak hoof, that's determined. All that matters is how they act on the way. Perfect dorfs linger on, good dorfs get eaten by the spirit of hunger, bad dorfs go to the wild world.

Death is followed by a distinct sound. Like...some kind of comic 'boing' I guess.
