But Johansen had not given out yet. Knowing that the Thing could surely overtake the Alert until steam was fully up, he resolved on a desperate chance; and, setting the engine for full speed, ran lightning-like on deck and reversed the wheel. There was a mighty eddying and foaming in the noisome brine, and as the steam mounted higher and higher the brave Norwegian drove his vessel head on against the pursuing jelly which rose above the unclean froth like the stern of a daemon galleon. The awful squid-head with writhing feelers came nearly up to the bowsprit of the sturdy yacht, but Johansen drove on relentlessly. There was a bursting as of an exploding bladder, a slushy nastiness as of a cloven sunfish, a stench as of a thousand opened graves, and a sound that the chronicler could not put on paper. For an instant the ship was befouled by an acrid and blinding green cloud, and then there was only a venomous seething astern; where - God in heaven! - the scattered plasticity of that nameless sky-spawn was nebulously recombining in its hateful original form, whilst its distance widened every second as the Alert gained impetus from its mounting steam.
^^This is canon now. Except he wasn't Norwegian, he was British. More racism I know, but I can only make so many concessions before history grows tentacles and crawls out the window. And we'll say the yacht had supplies on it or something rather than troops, because if I were a soldier I would bayonet the man who drove me toward the tentacle monster.
Sosoku,
GigDes,
adwarf, and
Stirk are on deck. I skipped ATHATH for what should be obvious reasons and Tiruin because I don't want to wait all day to write the first few turns. I'm allowed to do it tho 'cause she's my friend.
adwarf/Carl Sanderson,
Sosoku234/Keaton West,
GigDes/Noah Shepard,
Stirk/Harold HotchkissYou're on the
Stapleton, having just witnessed the destruction of the
Prince of Wales. You're about half an hour from the beach near Gaba Tepe. How do you react to what has just taken place?
Each section is divided into two fire teams and you're responsible for leading one of them. Listen to the Corporal in your section and the Sergeant, who is second in command of the platoon. After him there is the Lieutenant above him, who is in charge of everyone.
Appearance: An old man in his forties with brown hair, and who is the late stages of growing bald. He's short, about 5' 5", with a lean build, a constant scowl, and a glare that could seemingly penetrate through a trench and kill a man. He is rarely found without a cigarette, or cigar lit.
Position: Lance Corporal, 1st Section, 1st Platoon
Inventory: Peaked Cap, Enfield Rifle (20x .303 cartridges), Rifle Bayonet, Entrenching Tool
Appearance: About as average as one can be in build. He has white hair and a heavy stubble. Green eyes. No real physical deformities.
Position: Private, 1st Section, 1st Platoon
Inventory: Peaked Cap, Enfield Rifle (20x .303 cartridges), Rifle Bayonet, Entrenching Tool
Appearance: A man who looks younger than his 21 years. Promoted and still unsure of himself, and it shows. His face is still smooth, and his eyes are dark and narrow. His brown hair is, of course, cropped short. A bible can be seen in his front pocket.
Position: Lance Corporal, 2nd Section, 1st Platoon
Inventory: Peaked Cap, Enfield Rifle (20x .303 cartridges), Rifle Bayonet, Entrenching Tool
Appearance: His curly black hair is to regulations, if barely, and his eyes are a grayish blue. He has a slightly-taller-than average, though his straight posture makes him appear taller than he is. He naturally wears the uniform-complete with slouch hat that is often found lying on the back of his neck rather than its proper seat. His face is smooth and close-shaven, generally staying that way from effort on his part.
