Hah, ends up that right after this, one of my mason's feet caught on fire, he was only 1 Z above where the magma was, and he ended up starting a huge forest fire, killing all of my dwarves in a beautiful booze explosion.

Time to try this again.

It is, just stone covers magma and water visually.  If he waited a little more to take the picture the stones would have started melting.
