I have a bookshelf full of tabletop RPGs. Whenever I pick one up to read, I usually end up with an idea for a campaign. While I may have only thought of specific beings in that universe, others inevitably exist and the world(s) in question are teeming with life, intelligent and otherwise. When I stop reading, I trash the mental universe because I know I'll never run a physical game.

This story can't compete for pure numbers, but I did once accidentally kill billions of innocents. It was midgame in one of my Human Sword of the Stars runs, and I ran into an undefended colony of a race I had fairly good relations with (no alliance, but we were at a cease fire). Being the good person I am, I set my ships to auto resolve-peaceful and hit the next turn button. That very same turn the xeno idiot broke our cease fire and my ships obliterated the colony in a single turn. I only noticed when I was gearing up to move my fleets, and I thought "Hey, wasn't there a Tarka colony there just a minute ago?"

What about Mass effect? You end up killing entire planets there. Though, admittedly, its more of just "oh, you killed random people" rather than "You killed the guy you traded with earlier"

I had this odd moment once in Space Empires IV:

Is that in 3?  My paragon Shep didn't kill any planets in 1+2...

Total war serie is also famous for high unit count, and I played the heck out of that. sure it doesn't compete with a 4x game but here you see every and each one of whom you kill, it's not just a x billion numbers floating away.

That lane minion....he he had a family.... back home that was praying that he would be one of the lucky ones one of the ones that would be in lane at the end, one of the lucky few survivors.

.... then I walked up to it, slashed it and it's buddies to death for essence stacks and devoured his green heart.


Those dolphins, promised a better life on a planet on the frontier... it was harder than they expected, but they made do, over the course of a few years the planet was wonderfuly terraformed through the power of elbow (fin?) grease and determination.

Right as one loving mother was swimming back home after a hard day's work at the terraforming station my fleet of space-bird-dragons shows up in orbit with half a dozen "Planet Glasser MKIV"s and the first beam vaporizes everything in a 10 mile radius, her family, friends, life, every member of her species for lightyears in every direction... all gone in an instant as my fleet undoes 2 years of work in under two minutes, leaving only a molten husk...

....and I felt bad about my undertale genocide run, that was only a couple hundred, at most....

Like most others my kill count depends on the definition of npc. It ranges from a few thousand to untold numbers, if you count all my 4x game massacres. I'm not even sure how high my max kill count would be.

Yeah, I'm positive I'm in the quintillions. Thanks to RTS combined with playing... many, many games. Diablo probably hasn't helped to that count. Or having played Borderlands a lot. Or Luftrausers...

Anywho, I believe many hours trying and failing to besiege cities in Civ II have given me at least a few billion.

Um, not counting 4X games, each time I play a game, save for nonviolent ones like Ace Attorney or Professor Layton, I'd say it goes up between, maybe, 50-200? With things like Zelda toward the lower end of the spectrum, any given non-Pokémon/EarthBound RPG in the middle, and FPSes and Dwarf Fortress at the upper end. Which amounts to maybe a third world nation's worth of people per month? A third world nation and a half if I get a week off from school or something.

I've been playing Mount & Blade quite a bit for the past few days, playing as a horse archer with a massive two-handed War Cleaver for close encounters or hunting down fleeing foes, of which there are plenty. There's also all the dudes my soldiers have killed. Probably depopulated a few good-sized towns in that time span alone.

If we count 4X games over my lifetime the number is probably uncountable.
