Dwaven stupidity : The fall or the stairs?
« on: February 27, 2016, 01:11:06 pm »

So I lost a fortress to a Titan and its webs. the 20 soldiers in full steel don't even scratch it.

I made a new one with a complete wall of 2 levels, and a channel of 2 levels down and 3 wide. After 2 years the same titan came back! This time i retract the bridge so i was safe. I recruited 10 marksdwarfs, trained them a little and then I sent the engravers to carve fortification on the second level of the wall (there is floors). But after the first fortification the dwarfs saw the titan. I expected a simple job cancellation, wich was not a problem.

But instead of just going back to safety by the stairs inside the fortress, these little fuckers climbed the wall, jump the 4 levels to land on hard rock, just in front of the titan, with no path to come back to the fortress ...

I sent my marksdwarfs to shoot from the several fortifications the engravers made before committing suicide. After shooting a few bolts the marksdwarfs done the same, feeding the titan. I tried to make a patrol route on the roof, but i didn't help. So i open the bridge in a final attempt with 20 melee dwarfs. Same results than my last fortress. And the first time the same megabeast kill 2 fortress. I feel vengefull !

So how to use crossbows safely? Is it obligatory to add another wall level so they can't climb or am i missing something?

short anwser: you cant

dwarves are stupid and will climb THROUGH the fortifications if they cant go above it to attack whatever is out there

for webbing beasts you should try giant serrated disk traps down a long hallway with an expendable dwarf at the end

ftfy

Also, is the ability to dodge through fortifications an intended feature (HOW IS THAT REALISTIC) or a bug?

Would using multiple layers of fortification help or cant the dorfs shoot through that.

Dodging through walls is a bug, and I expect doing the same though fortification is just the same bug.

Titans are indeed trap avoiders, so I usually use menacing spike traps driven by a mine cart repeater to kill them. A sacrificial door is fine as bait, and a drawbridge to lock it it while it works on the door keeps it contained. In the few cases where the FB/Titan is too tough for my green glass spears I build a cave-in trap on top of the tunnel where the nasty critter is caught.

Edit: The engravers trying to climb down to charge the invader is probably caused by alcohol fueled bravery. Also, higher walls will not contain your suiciders: you need a roof on top of them as well. If they somehow manage to climb through (rather than over) fortifications they're beyond salvation.

^ Seconded, he is right. Dwarves don't (intentionally) path through fortifications, but they can dodge into one.

I've made good use of marksdwarves without having them dodge through fortifications and the like. You just need a good setup. Since you're already invested some time into micromanaging marksdwarves, one more step isn't too complicated to do. The changes to gait and the introduction of climbing and jumping mechanics in fort mode in 40.24 (plus the bugs associated with them) made the old minimalist marksdwarves tower designs prior to 40.24 rather hazardous for your own marksdwarves. But I've always roofed or walled over my fortifications so I've never encountered any of these issues, save for enemies dodging from the bolts and through the fortifications.

Seconded (thirded?). An enclosed bunker of 'defend burrow' marksdwarves works just fine (as part of a more extensive defence system). Nobody will try to 'climb through the fortifications' whatever that means. Dodging through the fortification might happen, especially if you've given them nowhere else to dodge to.

Once in a while a goblin will dodge into the bunker, which is highly amusing.

That sounds like one powerful Titan. What's it made of?

The material was not particulary hard, the problem is that the titan chain web everyone and one shot even full steel armor soldiers. I think i hit it only 3 times with melee weapons, the total of the 2 fortress. For 40 soldiers it's a bit low.
