Getting Started With Dwarf Fortress (Help)
« on: February 27, 2016, 03:11:30 am »

Hello every,

I got started into this genre of games from Gnomoria. It has been probably over a year since I played, but I must of put in 200-300 hours. Recently I discovered a dwarf fortress remote app, which really appealed to me. I really wanted to get to the point where i could actually play this on my phone comfortably. I have watched a few tutorial introductions, but I have some questions.

- I am sure it's located somewhere on this site or wiki, but what is the best stuff to download to get started. I have heard of a "lazy newb pack" that can actually make the game isometric even? This sounds absolutely amazing and the only reason I played Gnomoria was to be able to see the stuff I build.
-Any help on what exactly to get would be great! I'll use the wiki to assist me in actually learning the game as I feel I already have a jump on the game from watching many hours of videos and my experience with gnomoria.

Thanks everyone!

PS: Has anyone actually purchased any of the books/ebooks on this game and have found them to be extremely helpful?

EDIT: Things I have discovered I need

1.Lazy newb pack
2. Dwarf Therapist
3 Stone Sense
4. A sound pack still in search of
5. Good Tile Set (I like the ironhand one I think)
(Reading on what Dwarf Hack is later)

I use the Lazy Newb Pack http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=126076 which contains many utilities, including Dwarf Therapist, DFHack, and tile sets. There's also Soundsense, Isoworld, and other stuff I don't use. Legends Viewer is quite handy for picking sites.
Thus, it looks like you should start with LNP and see if it contains what you want.

The latest LNP is this one. It's just one version behind the current Dwarf Fortress, but it contains bugs that actually make it easier to play.

The things you need is the game, Dwarf Therapist (to assign labors and see dwarf details), and maybe a graphic tileset. I haven't seen much progress in isometric view applications, you can see if the ones included fit you.

DFHack adds a lot of features that let you manage the fortress more conveniently (like searching for items you'd normally need to manually go through a huge list).

Blue Dwarf has been happy lately. He did some !!science!! recently. He admired a fine forum post lately. He was enraged by a forum troll recently. He was upset by the delayed release of the new version of Dwarf Fortress lately. He took joy in planning a noble's death recently.

The best isometric visualizers I know of for the newer versions of dwarf fortress are Stonesense and Armok Vision. Stonesense requires DFHack I think or rather its packaged along with DFHack, and it has a more cartoonish feel to it. Whereas Armok Vision is a straight up 3d visualizer that uses the Unity engine. You'll need a copy of Dwarf fortress running in the background for them both to work.
