Are there ways to make a little money on the internet?
« on: February 23, 2016, 03:52:44 pm »

Goodness I use the life advice forum a lot...

I can't really do much in terms of a job (I have... limitations right now)

But are there ways to make pocket change on the internet if your willing to put in a days work?

What skills do you have that people are willing to pay for? I know that there's a bit of money to be made doing editing work, but it's iffy as far as finding jobs at reasonable rates, I think.

Having connections really seems to be the most important thing, I know there's all sorts of things people need to do online, but don't want to invest the time and annoyance into.

Art commisions. :p
That's probably not something you can just hop into though. Nor is it very profitable.

This might or might not help you though.

etsy is becoming very popular for small crafts if you happen to be gifted. they take a bigger share of shopify but also have a more professional vibe.

if you are analytical, there are websites that pay for usability testing on other websites. if writing is your thing, there is plenty translation gig and freelance copy writing to go by etc.

just put some more detail in here

There's "Upwork" - but you'd be competing against people in China, India, etc...

The name sounds Orwellian too, can't imagine why they chose it.

I know I sound like a spam bot right now but I have used a site named 'clickworker' in the past, which offers dumb projects such as translating sentences into your own language, or judging whether a site is a porn site. (yep that's right in the process of doing that you sometimes get to see some nasty stuff although it blocks out most of it, not all). It can make you PERHAPS earn a minimum wage per hour, but certainly not more than that. These are things search engines use for their databases, and they are things no computer can do as of yet, hence it is done by humans.

Another thing is to be a 'chat operator' , meaning you will pretend to be a sexy girl (or whatever the sexual fantasy of your client is) and have 'sexy' chat conversations with several people at the same time. This could earn you a reasonable wage per hour if you are a creative and fast typer. But of course this requires a specific skill and willingness to do such things. I haven't tried it yet.

Of course if you are a web designer, programmer, artist etc. then yes you could make some actual money. However you could also get an actual job then (except maybe as an artist).

Another thing is to do translating jobs, however you might require certain certificates for that which I at least don't have and you probably neither. And you, erm, have to speak a foreign language in the first place.

Do you have any actual skills?

If not, are you attractive?

Most people want free services from the internet.

Even with that though, there are ways to make money using the internet on a small scale.  Most people dont have the patience though.

For instance, you can resell random junk on ebay. People buy the darndest things-- and as long as you are willing to set up the auctions and then ship the crap on time after getting payment processed, you can make a small amount of money on the side-- but you have to keep an eye out for salable crap to put up.

What is your internet like in terms of speed and stability. Furthermore, how are your english speaking skills? If you're not too shy, you can try bibo and teach some Asians english. It's also decently paying if you're willing to put in the time, IIRC you get 1.50 $ per 25 minute lession, and there's bonuses for a certain number of lessons done each month. Plus you set your own schedule so you can do as littler or as much as you want each month.

No offense, but any job in real life (even working things like chopping firewood or doing chores for old people) is almost certainly gonna pay a fair bit more than any sort of money you are going to be making off of the internet. :-\

That is true, but I have a limited ability to get a job right now... due to anxiety.

Visit a doctor and get a proof that you are indeed unable to work due to psychological issues.

If you don't get this proof from your doctor, then you should just suck it up and get to work.

Hmm, that's not (quite) an ad, although (surprise!) there are plenty of ads on the site.  Although it is a bit scummy - they're trying to imitate lifehacker.com, which is a pretty good site in general (and they fooled me at first too).  Sometimes the articles can be a little superficial, that's often alleviated by good comments.   That article was nothing super special, but it *was* a decent brief overview of a few ways to get started.  How much do you expect from 1 article covering 24 things?  Books have been written about each of those approaches, it's kinda up to you to do more research on the ones that sound attractive to you.

Here's lifehacker's version of an article like that (2012, but still should be mostly applicable): http://lifehacker.com/5952900/how-can-i-earn-some-pocket-money-online  and mroe recent http://lifehacker.com/this-graphic-lists-over-200-resources-for-making-money-1609553725

And yeah, the big question is "what skills do you have" - although there are a bunch of whimsical gigs on sites like fiverr and the like, you'll get more steady jobs/higher paying jobs in areas you have some skills in.  Translating from other languages you know to English might be one?

One potential pitfall - how are you planning to get paid?  I got the impression you're not in the US, and even in the US paypal makes you jump through hoops to "validate" your account once you start receiving more than a few bucks, and you're supposed to be over 18 and have a bank account to link.

I'd suggest at least trying out fiverr, or whatever similar site is "hot" now.  Register, look at the gigs other people are offering, put up a gig that you're willing to do for $5 (figure <$4 after their fees), hope someone buys it, do the work, buyer reviews it, if no dispute you get $4 or so.

These are called "micro gig sites" or "micro job sites", and there's a ton -  Fiverr, shorttask, SeoClerks, tenbux, MyCheapJobs, Gigbucks, Fourerr, Zjobs, Yooker, etc and etc.

For bigger jobs they are called "freelancer sites" - freelancer, upwork, guru, there are hundreds of these too.
