Early Spring, 1051

It's amazing how strong the survival instinct is.  For a bunch of self-interested idiots, the ex-cons sure came together well.  There were basically three divisions.

Edos, who basically constructed everything, set up stockpiles, and butchered the horse and camel for food while everybody else was busy.  He provided an answer to the question:  When is an empty barrel not an empty barrel?  Answer: anytime it's properly stored.  He repeatedly insisted said empty barrel was not an empty barrel when it was A) Empty and on a drink-only food stockpile or B) Empty and on a furniture stockpile.  Remove said stockpile destination and OMG, look at that empty barrel!  I can brew stuff now!  ARGH! I dunno if this is a new 33e issue, since my last game never had that problem.  Edos is also working on cooking up what food we have, simple meals for now until stocks improve.

Then there was Mystry, who served as Edos' gofer more or less ... except when he decided to wander around the general area of the outpost, complaining about how thirsty he was while ignoring the ale barrels that everybody else drank out of(both before and after he got thirsty).  Several times a new hauling task, such as tallow or meat or plants, came up -- he'd take care of the task(still thirsty) and go back to wandering around and complaining.  Finally managed to find the barrel and take care of that thirst issue, but for a while I thought we'd have an early casualty.  Interestingly enough, he refuses to put any bones or skulls in the refuse stockpile.

Everybody else worked on plant gathering -- few and far between but there are a lot of them, all of which can be planted here.  Between that and the weird wildlife situation(apparently the definition of Terryifying and Haunted now equals a bunch of cows ... with one nightwing thrown in eventually), food and drink will be sustainable over time.  It'll require care though -- with only two barrels and three wood logs from the wagon for rotated constructed/destroyed workshops, we're pretty much perpetually stuck with a minimal amount of drink until more wood can be acquired.  Ranging far and wide for whatever shrubs are available is the chief business of the day, and already found are prickle berries, wild strawberries, longland grass, sliver barbs, and whip vine.

Our holdings, one month in:

Red sand deserts depress me. Mostly because you cant see blood on them.

As you journey to the center of the world, feel free to read the death announcements of those dwarves that suffer your neglect.

One billion b-balls dribbling simultaneously throughout the galaxy. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the cosmos. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips, I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my veins. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk and free throw.

Mid-Spring, 1051

Xotes has begun farming operations, a little whip vine but mostly prickle berries, which everyone seems to like so far(eating them while ignoring Edos's luscious camel tallow biscuits and horse meat biscuits -- what's not to like there?).

Meanwhile, Sandono has begun 'hunting' to keep more than shrubs on the menu -- a nice euphemism for camel wrestling.

Late Spring, 1051

Food supplies continue to creep up ever-so-slowly, but Sandono has given up on hunting camels for now -- he just can't get close enough to any of them.  More meat will have to wait until he has some bolts and a crossbow so he will at least have a chance at getting in a lucky shot now and then.

Early Summer, 1051

This month's excitement involved making new food stockpiles(one for seeds, one for edible/brewable).  It's a wonder we haven't all gone insane yet -- this farming/shrub-gathering crap is not fit work for a dwarf.

Updated snapshot as autumn begins ...

Edos has started cooking off some of the strawberries and prickle berries into more palatable dishes.

Early Autumn, 1051

12th Limestone – The dwarven caravan has arrived – we requested picks, axes, logs, and anvils above all else.  The picks and axes are especially important to any attempt to build a self-sufficient community that is more than a bunch of piles of shrubs in the middle of the desert.

It took about a week for Edos to disassemble to workshops and build a functional trade depot out of the timber, then everyone dropped what they were doing to assemble what little we have to sell:  a bit of leather that used to be the horse and camel, and all of the inedible plants that we’ve found, mostly hide root and whip vine, keeping the strawberries and prickle berries as they are our best source of sustenance at the moment.  Everybody that is except Roy, who decided it was time to sleep.

Soon most everyone followed suit, leading to a comical situation with the liaison standing near Xotes waiting for him to wake up, a pair of dwarven merchants and their axedwarf escort guards inbound, and the entire lot of Rothral’s inhabitants snoring away delightfully at various indiscriminate locations in the desert sand, ignoring the situation completely.

Thankfully the merchants waited long enough for everyone to wake up and finishing hauling everything to the dept.  Frankly it wouldn’t have made that much difference anyway.  The caravan had brought an axe … a toy one though.  Which wouldn’t do us much good.  They had an anvil … but it was worth several times as much as everything we had to sell combined.

I would if there was a chance they'd get pissed off and try to wipe us out.  But since there's no possible consequence, I tend not to do those types of things.
