Yep. By reading books.
No real point to that though, because you either can or cannot read.
But, if you want to go for a re run of Morul, adventure mode style, you can then train reader up to legendary (cf thread http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=34933.0)

Currently I have a Deer Man Hunter. I plan to build a Hunting Lodge/Mead Hall/Mystical Forest Fort once I find a suitable location. There me and any companions I might have can drink, craft and hunt, and perhaps, should we become bored, we could hunt the beasts and peoples which plague the world!

Hopefully there'll be a way to fish and a way to farm in some future updates, as well as a way to use and create a forge.

Praise Armok.

Traps too. Being able to construct and set traps. That would round out the hunting lodge set up.

I notice that apart from a hall, you can make temples and taverns too. Has anyone tried? Do they get visitors? Do you have to offload first and come back later, or perhaps retire first?

Was about to try that. The workers teleport to the surface when you start work?

--edit Oh, do you mean you all started on the surface and you set some building work several layers down in the caverns?

Where are they if you retire and come back to visit as someone else?
Workers houses can be set, right? (Haven't tried it myself, but Toady mentioned it as a feature earlier).

Time for some Science this evening then (or perhaps when 43.02 comes out). How do the inhabitants of an adventurer camp respond to the fortress embark crew? Does it make a difference if they're from a different civ, or a hostile one even? Can the lord of the hut make mandates? Will he apply for citizenship? Lots of fun things to try out.

My attempts at making a lovely wooden shack for my spoils and companions are, unfortunately, being hampered by rotting wooden furniture.
I'm assuming masterworks can't rot? If not, are there any other ways to get around this that don't require changing the raws and thus having to gen a new world?

Otherwise i guess i'll just have to settle for a crappy empty wood box to keep my treasure in while i wait for the next update.
