So, i know that the amount of companions you can have is social awareness and fame, but who exactly can i recruit? I cant even seem to get an awesome squad of badass blacksmiths. "badsmiths" if you will. (blackasses?), but hewhoshallnotbenamed manged to get way too many goblin children. can you even recruit non military units?

Try recruiting civilian/non military individuals as performers.

To be honest I'm not really sure who you can't recruit using this method, I've even recruited giants.

nobles and those who are on duty.
And if you botch your performance roll and unimpressed them.
other than that everyone loves dances and finds that like a fame adding positive boost.

DO some quests for a lord then better warriors will want to join you.

Everyone has varying curiosity and excitement seeking traits, but if you don't have deeds to impress someone they're unlikely to even express their desire for adventure around you. If you spread the news or tell the tale of your exploits, you can get many civilians interested in coming with you.

And never once do they think, "Shit, I've never left Bag's End, that's way out of my league!" Instead they say, "Hey, we can get lots of glory by slaying this murderous titan whose location I don't even know! Let's do just that!"
