how can i increase world-gen cpu power?
« on: February 21, 2016, 11:42:07 am »

anything larger than a pocket world takes ages to advance in years. The 2 week calender on embark takes like a minute. there a way i can make my computer direct more processing power at df?

Dwarf Fortress is single threaded, and it likely already brings one of your CPU cores to 100% load. So, apart from getting a new CPU with high single thread performance (for instance the excellent Pentium G4520 - other alternatives would be the barely faster i3 6320, or if you have money to burn, the i7 6700K, but the i7 is 3.5 times as expensive as the Pentium, and only 11% faster when it comes to single thread applications like dwarf fortress...) the only option I'd see would be to overclock your current processor...

Yeah, I've noticed that world gen is definitely a lot slower in 42.x compared to 40.x (and that's on an Intel i7-4790K with DDR3-2100 RAM).

So I will generate half a dozen worlds while doing other things, then come back to pick and choose.

4 threads on intel, 1 thread per instance of the game, 4 worlds genning without loss, you could do 8 worlds at once without a significant slowdown, or if your an AMD user like me you can do 16 at once without a big impact on performance

Well, cores-1, because your OS needs at least one to do background stuff.

I never generate anything larger than small. With the right settings you can get everything you want even in pocket region, and it is faster in my experience, even with same population/number of sites/historical activity.

A multi threaded DF would be awesome but is probably too much for a team consisting of volunteers to handle, sadly.

Paid multi-threaded fork of DF anyone? :p

well, if one knows what they are doing they can force DF to run multithreaded without altering the game itself, though its like forcing SLI/crossfire, if you do it wrong it can result in the program running slower or some programs just break even if you do it right

And I think you're unaware of how DF is made. Toady One does all the programming, with design help from Threetoe. There's no room for programming volunteers, which is one reason DT, DFHack, etc. exist.
