new version unusually peacefull...
« on: February 19, 2016, 02:34:00 pm »

Other than a brief kobold raid... my forts in 42.05, haven't gotten any FUN visitors... (And yes Invaders is set to yes, although I hadn't bothered checking until now because I figured well I got Kobolds atleast once)

Is this the new normal?  I use to get invaders even in peaceful/tranquil biomes.

That's what DF needs, The gutbuster brigade.  Screw that elf and his cat. Thibbledorf Pwent is the real hero.

Check your exported wealth counter. In .05, there's a bug that causes it to stay at zero, thus never triggering several things, including the gobbos.

Created wealth and population trigger goblin sieges, not exports.

Do you have goblin neighbors?
Is your population over 80?

If both of these are true, and it's been more than a year since you hit population 80 export the legends file and check the local goblin populations in Legends viewer or something similar. Have they all been wiped out recently? On average, sieges are more reliable (if there's anyone around) and bigger than in 40.x.  Ambushes remain almost non-existent.

Incidentally, in vanilla goblin raws, both exported and created wealth siege triggers are set to 0 so neither have any effect as far as I understand.

And in vanilla goblin raws, there is no [AMBUSHER] tag, which is why goblin ambushes don't happen.

Bull. I have had three goblin sieges this year alone over in BLAZECOOKS.

I have one goblin neighbor, and I'm not even their closest enemy.

Well, you're clearly not their closest friend. :)

Location, location, location...
Since world activation, siegers actually come from somewhere, and they may elect to attack targets closer to them than you. They may also suffer mishaps such that they lose the site they should have attacked from in the years between embark and they being allowed to attack.

Use legends mode pre embark to look at sites near to your intended embark. You want the nearest goblin controlled site to well stocked with goblins, as well as belonging to a goblin civ, and preferably the site should be closer to you than to anyone else so you become their primary target. You also want to look at nearby sites for other races, since they may actually be under the control of a goblin civ, but not be very suitable for sending endless waves of invaders at you.
Black towers are (sometimes) a source of early goblinite deliveries, but they tend to wear out fast, rarely able to send more than reasonable 3 waves (that are mostly wiped out by you. If they leave they can come back, of course). They simply run out of (dead) bodies to send.

The whole of 40+ has been pretty peaceful, for me at least. I've done around thirty forts and only got six invasions.

Check if you have at least 80 citizens.
But, you need luck I guess.
I haven't seen any hostile goblins(minus those in my taverns) since 42 was released.

I just got seiged by roughly 7-8 squads of goblins who wiped out about 70 of my dwarves by climbing down treeroots. Fuckers kept going out to "clean" the fort and running right into them.  Anyone know how to turn cleaning off with orders or such?

I suggest burrows. I always designate some kind of "panic room", usually the food storage area, for all dwarves to be in during a siege.

I recently had an issue with goblin assassins. Some of the siege apparently broke off and stealthed, and appeared in various alleyways attacking civilians.

They were all hiding below in a civilian alert burrow. When the trap hallway carnage ensued they all started running up to collect stuff which I quickly dealt with but couldn't stop the cleaners :(

I generally exclude my traps from the civilian alert burrow. If I then close the outer drawbridge on one of the entrances I temporarily extend the burrow to cover the cage traps so the captives can be hauled off and the traps reloaded. That burrow part is then repainted to remove the area again afterwards, and the drawbridge is opened again for a new batch (Typically I've then closed off another entrance, extended the burrow in that direction....).
Otherwise, cleaning is a job, but I wouldn't recommend manually disabling it on each dorf to later enabling it again.

Goblin assassins sounds interesting. The closest thing I've got is one or two baby snatchers.

I haven't seen much of the invader pathing bug in 0.40.X, so most of my fortresses have had their share of sieges (see Location, Location, Location... above).
It may be that mostly using pocket worlds helps, but the 0.42.X flipside is that I've so far have had a total of 1 visitor over half a dozen packet world fortresses (the larger worlds have successfully provided visitors). My current fortress is an exception, though. I've only had hello/good by goblin sieges (plus two black towers' worth of undead), and then the goblin civs have imploded, with 2 goblin civs that are considered non failed, but those contain 0 goblins and something like 1 and 4 others. The world, however, contains 16000 goblin outcasts and 10000 regular goblins living in sites not owned by any civ. The goblins who did pass my way came from a civ that lost its only site (to another goblin civ) 2 years after my fortress was founded, but kept up their cameo visits for another 5 years.

I've had goblin sieges, a little less than once a year. But they're fairly routine now. Seal it up, send out the troops, build a few coffins, and you're done. And it does seem to vary widely, my previous fort was much quieter, and this one isn't that noisy considering. Strangely, while I saw kobold thieves for a while (it's been a while) I've never seen a goblin snatcher this fort.

I don't mind this, mind, since I don't play this as a war game, but they aren't as threatening as they used to be. I feel like training for my troops has gotten a lot more efficient since when I first started playing (before the last huge update, but not that much before.)

I think I may have to edit the code to bring back ambushes, I kind of miss them. And goblin assassins would be a grand innovation.
