« on: February 18, 2016, 09:41:20 pm »

Inspired by a thread at rpg.net, I will be making my own version. Anyone may vote in this thread. I will offer a question, and there will be a vote in thread and in the poll. The winning option will become part of the world or immediate campaign area.

Discussion is now open for this

What shape does the world take?
1. Sphere
2. Disk, single or double sided
3. Hollow world
4. Something stranger( spiral, u-shape, Klein bottle). please describe

The world, or at least the material plane, is on the inside of a vast, hollow sphere. In the center lies a single great sun, with 8 great shafts of obsidian transfixing it. These shafts occasionally shift, creating seasons. No one knows what is on the other side of the sphere. No one has ever dug all the way through it.  However, occasionally, when people dig deep enough, they find another cavern like their own. Or perhaps not. Perhaps, it is similar, but the material plane is from long ago or from the future.

There are many other planes. There is a great wheel of planes representing various alignments, with various races inhabiting it. Mirroring the material plane are the Plane of Fey, Shadow. Ethereal, and Dreams. Two other important planes are the Astral Sea, where many gods have realms, and the Elemental Chaos. The elemental Chaos was once many planes, each a different alignment, but they now mix freely. However, there one will find more air than anything else where the plane of air once was, and what was once the plane of negative energy still drains life.

Various trickster gods are chief gods, as they are the only ones most of the other gods can agree on. They limit influence in the material plane simply to make things more interesting. Inera, Loki, Hermes ,and  Lildall are the four most powerful. Coyote is currently attempting to edge out Loki

These are the greatest of the non-chief gods, but are effectively greater gods

Sublimity-Through-Patience: Is the sun itself. An ancient deity, he retains a demeanour foreign to those of the current epoch, using a description in place of a proper name. STP is beyond a doubt, nearly unstoppable as a god as nearly all creatures have need of the sun and the life it brings. Despite this, STP maintains a hands-off approach to the world, having few lesser aspects in the world. The few he does maintain are inconspicuous and are usually difficult to identify as STP. Gods of justice, life, civilisation and order flock to his banner, though rarely does he aid them. When he does however, victory is almost always assured. If the Titan idea is pursued: STP is the Titan of Order who survived by editing his own soul. If chaos magic idea is pursued: several of those binding spirits are STP probing lifeforms on ihow to act 'godly'. His inactivity is partly due to his knowledge-probing and because he's also making sure none of the other Titans ever find out. The other half is that he genuinely likes his current role in the universe. If trickster god idea is pursued: STP answers all direct prayers with his godly incandescence. All petitioners have some learnt not to praise the sun. Instead, they praise his team of secretaries. Lesser gods and heroes are also regularly summoned by these secretaries to go on a quest with failure resulting in a redemption quest to fight the Titans.

Selene: an outcast amongs the great gods due to her youth, having ascended into greater godhood just before the last ice age and as such is still remembered as a mortal by her peers. Formerly being the ruler of a vast elven empire, her ascension resulted in the utter extinction of all pure elves, leaving only aberrants and other genetic oddities. In modern times, Selene takes the form of a giant spherical satellite that orbits the world, called the Moon. Before her ascendence, the world in fact did not have a moon. As a deity, she presides over the night, wisdom and knowledge. She is at significant odds with the other great gods due to her continued studies on the metaphysics of the world, especially godhood. This has resulted in a glut of weak-but-numerous gods under her command. If trickster god idea is pursued: Selene often raises random anythings to godhood for varying amounts of time. For purely scientific reasons, of course.

Selene blocks half of the sun, rotating around, creating a night effect

Magic is something utterly alien, seeping through cracks in the hollow world.

It is possible to bind spirits to oneself. This enables a less alien form of magic, but can have backlashes

Definitely interested.

I am sad that my attempts at this didn't go so hot, but I found tools and guides to help me since then.

If you need any help with a certain aspect, like a program to use or a guide to read, just PM me and I'd love to help. Otherwise I'll be watching!

The world is cylindrical and 100 km in diameter, rotating rapidly enough to produce a gravity of 1 G (for convenience's sake). Its environs are placed on the inside surface. It is unknown how thick the cylinder is - nobody has managed to dig through to the other side in all of time.

The world is suspected to be infinitely long as well. Perhaps it is toroidal, past and future coming together as the beginning of time also becomes its end. Nobody really knows.

Finally, the world is segmented. Exactly every 628.3185 kilometers of length makes a single segment. The segments are fundamentally identical as far as anyone can tell, the same land repeating ad infinitum. The main difference between them appears to be that they are about 25 years apart in time. It is this distinction that makes for the most easily describable direction of the world - pastward and futureward, or "forward" and "back" in common parlance.

The most interesting thing about this is that past segments seem to decide the fate of the future ones - exceptional travelers have gone to their family homes in the 25-year-old past and found their younger selves and parents. Some claim to have killed them and returned to find entire swaths of world entirely different - these statements, however, are impossible to actually verify, though their existence is cited as potential proof for the idea that the world is not so much a cylinder as it is a tree with infinite invisible branches. A multiversal world tree, if you will.

The world also appears to be somewhat hollow; mining more than thirty feet downwards leads to a fall into a seemingly endless abyss. Most resources come from the meteorites that hit the planet.

I would think that there is some sort of eldritch magic gravity on the other side. There has to be some light on the inner side, so it may act like a powerful enough magnetic field outside the edge to hold someone/thing to it, whereas inside, it repels matter from the center.

Are these referring to the cylinder thing?

To clarify, the segmentation of the infinite cylinder arises because it's the same nation-sized place repeated as it occurs across all of time, time in this case flowing linearly onward in each segment as well as being linearly and discretely incremental along the length of the tubeworld.

If it's a hollow world, how about a tiered world? You dig down, and come to the next plane? And if you climb up far enough, you get to the next plane up?

Hm. If we are doing it this way, why not have the multiverse be littlerally that. Maybe it would be a hollow tube and wherever you dig or climb out of it, you open a new universe. You could move through time one way, or travel to a parallel universe that has diverged somewhere from the possible choices made in the past. The gravity stays the same, the same structure is universal, and it would be interesting to hop twenty years forward and three universes over.

Hmm... then only one world has a sky (or else digging from one to another would be fked up). That ok?
Not necessarily; it could just keep going, plane stacked on top of plane for eternity.
