Gods(and Titans(if borrowed from the Greek Pantheon)) have mostly infinite power, whereas similar beings(spirits) have limited power. Spirits are widespread and regularly influence mortals through various means. Gods only interfere when it either amuses them, or if they stand to gain power from it.

Suggestion: gods are left-over bits and pieces of matter that went unused in the creation of the world. Without any outside influence, gods are non-sentient particles that inhabit other pieces of matter, be they biotic or abiotic. If Respect is given to the object however, the inhabiting god particle react, becoming sentient if enough respect is accrued. Overtime, these particles actually become sapient and take on personas. With enough worship, nearly every object in creation could become a god.

Of course, that would never happen. Fears of divine overpopulation has resulted in nearly all current gods prohibiting the birth of any new gods, through violence if needed. These gods are led by six "Great Gods" who each maintain lesser aspects in different parts of the world. These lesser aspects are themselves individuals with their own attributes and are worshipped as gods in their own right. The Great God (or Godhead) is more a subconscious voice that lurks within each of these lesser aspects, influencing actions at certain times. Despite this, the Great God is sapient and can act on its own volition. Other gods are employed or controlled by the Six and rarely have more than one or two aspects.

Each god's power is proportional to the worship it receives.

I like micelus's idea for gods. I guess that would make demons lords and primordials like that shards that are simply first worshipped by creatures of the relevant type.

So anybody have any ideas for the Great Gods? We could do a different number. I like the idea of five, one for each order, chaos, good, evil, and neutrality. And each lesser being has multiple Great Gods as subconscious.

Wait, what do you mean by that? You said five gods and then listed four things. :P

How about life, death, time, and then maybe some elements?

As for other gods, I like the idea of Loki, Hermes, and then a few other trickster gods have a sort of competition.

How about various trickster gods being the chief deities? It'd make sense if you imagine it as a great celestial democracy, I believe. The only ones that both the good and the evil gods can deal with equally, and also the ones who lay down the rules to keep the universe their idea of interesting.

For lesser gods

A god of just combat
A god of battle
A god of conquest and destruction

Maybe they are simply different aspects of the same god. Maybe he/she roams around the various planes/domains in the astral sea?

Maybe a similar division for god of those who died heroically/peacefully
One for just normal deaths
One for the unquiet death

If you look at historical religions on Earth, you mostly see vicious pre-gods (In the greek mythology it is beings like chronos and Gaia herself) who later on in the mythological drama are slain ore defeated by their sons or grand sons.

So I say, create Titans of Time, of Matter, of Motion, Destruction, and Order and let them have kids to become aspects of the mortal thinking.

Basically if you want to incorporate the thoughts of micelus into my idea it came like this:
At the beginning the fantastical races who developed evolution wise came to an understanding of the concepts of Time, Motion, Matter, Destruction and Order. Pre-Sapiant Titans were born from the vicious desires and pains therefore they are understood as raw energies alien to the modern Sapiant races. After these understandings were found room came for more ideas, and based on these concepts Gods and Spirits were born. Logically they would conflict with the raw Titans, therefore, after enough gods appeared and gained power, they were able to overthrow them for a bit. Time is defeated when recording history, but only temporarily, the Titans always strike back eventually. While Gods are loaded with more "human" ideals, Titans should be completely alien, and totally uncaring to the mortal. Sometimes granting wishes, sometimes devouring, always present and dangerous.

And maybe we could have some areas like those from the scarred lands. Any some "elder" races that were created by titans, possibly the always evil ones

On a note not about gods and whatnot, I'd like to see Chaos Bindings as the main magic system.
Explanation:
In order to be a mage, you have to use magic incantations to preform a ritual to bind Chaos Spirits to your soul. The more you bind to your soul, the more power you get, but the more insane you get and the more powerful the Backlash(random side effects from casting, tend to be rather dramatic) from casting is. Once you've got your Spirits, you can cast basically any spell you've got power for after charging it up for a bit, but after casting, Backlash triggers, and the power of that depends on how many Chaos Spirits you have bound and how powerful the spell was.
In short: magic is risky, dangerous, rare, random, and powerful.

"MAGE! MAGE! HE'S GONNA KILL US ALL!" might end up being a pretty common statement relating to mages.

Assuming you decide to use this.
