Water purifying?
« on: February 18, 2016, 07:17:34 pm »

My 1x1 map has only some murky pools and the cavern(yes, the only layer due to the world gen settings) is also dry. Is there a way to purify murky water?

screw pump, or water pressure travelling from z+0 down to z-1 then up to z+0

Oh thanks.
So a U-shaped channel can do the trick?

You could also use water sources like brooks and rivers, making them run down and up again (because they rise to the level of the original river block, which is why some projects are prone to flooding) screwpumps will rise water to the intended level that they are on also

Providing a at least 2 z level deep access to water via a grate/well will also supply non-muddy clean water once purified for additional reference

It'll work at flooding your entire fort if you don't use a diagonal to reset the pressure at the z-level you want it. Just keep that in mind, since it wasn't mentioned in the thread yet.

They'll all flood your living space because the water will come up through the well. If it will go up through the J-bend in your modified version, why wouldn't it come up through the well?

You need to eliminate the pressure. The best way is a diagonal passage.

By making the water go through the diagonal, it will lose pressure and not go back up the well.

I think the first modified is the one you want.

However, if you have already built the current version, the tiles in your well are probably contaminated, so you may have to rebuild everything or some of it.

I have a draw bridge to cut the flow.
And after all it is just a murky pool so there shouldn't be much water.

I think only the middle design would work for purifying. For Modified 2, the top of the reservoir would be pure, but the bottom level would still be murky. Bad thoughts would occur if the water drained too low. You would need to drop the water down another level and pipe it into the reservoir from underneath.

But your draw bridge is shown as being several levels above your well. So even if you close the drawbridge, the water will still have enough pressure to rise up through the well and flood the room above it. It may not be a disastrous flood that fills the entire fort, but it could still wash dwarves down a stairwell where they'll probably land on their heads (cats land on their feet, dwarves land on their heads).

Plus, it would take pretty good timing on that drawbridge, even if it was on the same level as the well. Pressurized water moves *fast*. Drawbridges move 100 ticks after the lever is pulled, and the lever gets pulled by whatever dwarf decides to pull it, whenever he manages to get there. In other words, he'll probably pull the lever shortly after all of the water in the pool has already gotten past the bridge.

Oh, I see. But in fact my well did not overflow. Maybe the murky pool didn't have that much water to fill the tunnel...

The space below the well shows:
open space
water(7/7)

Thank you. I'll try that when I have a river or brook.
