Gold weapons?
« on: February 18, 2016, 04:18:19 am »

So after modding my game so I can make gold weapons, I'm wondering what weapons are worth making out of gold, and suggestions?

weapons are literally worth their weight in gold to caravans. Blunt weapons are pretty superior to silver blunt weapons and they'd make good bolts. Unless you want a ceremonial champion squad I'd say stick with bronze/steel/candy

Gold shields and spears for that Montezuma look.  You did not mention gold armor, so use leather thongs for style.
If you want more effective weapon, then gold mace, gold war hammer, and gold spiked balls in weapon traps.

Gold short sword, gold battle axe, gold pick can still be effective on unarmored targets.

Mod in some gold mauls to your entity civ files and you're *cough* golden. Mauls are pretty much the largest blunt weapons in the game with the caveat they are just for bashing things with extreme force. Supply that force and they'll collapse pretty much anything with is my reckoning (i ought to really test this out more in the arena).

*EDIT - I just tried a meagerly equipped ogre with a gold maul vs a bare bronze collossus, in 1v1 combat the ogre managed to deal substantial fractures on the collossus but lost out to wrestling, if i supplied more ogres im sure the collossus could be physically beaten to death.*

Alternatives like morningstars (that are actually edged and simultaneously blunt, like spiked balls) and flails (that are a little bit different but sort of like morning-stars essentially) are good candidates too if you just have spare gold lying around as you'll benefit from the density primarily with a teeny bit of shear.

EDIT - Now the collossus has equipped the maul and is parrying all the equipped ogres i send at it with the maul like it was a fencing sword meanwhile destroying kneecaps.

I'm pretty sure warhammers and maces are superior to mauls.  Lower contact area makes better blunt weapons.

isn't there a fortress mode bug where dorfs can't use 2-H weapons?

The classic bug is that the combat system doesn't check an individual's size modifiers, just the average creature size, when checking to see if they can equip a certain weapon.  So, the largest dwarves should be large enough to wield things like mauls or great axes, but they can't because the 60,000cm3 average dwarf is too small.  However, I thought that was one of the bugs that Toady addressed in the 0.42 releases.  In practice, a dwarven steel mug with a decent quality modifier is probably a better weapon than a goblin-made or human-made copper zweihander, maybe on par if you find an iron one, but in the long run, it's not worth your time to collect foreign weapons.

But being a large dwarf usually means fat, instead of having longer limbs.  :P

Since you are already modding things, go for the gold morning stars. I think they will be pretty amazing.

Can you actually assign mugs as weapons to your military, or is this only a thing dwarves will use in impromptu situations?

I'd like to think of a mug as "dwarven brass knuckles".

Warhammers and maces, nothing else. Gold mauls are useful if you want a dorf to shove people's ribs into their organs, but not much else due to their huge contact area.

Dwarfs can't make whips, though since you're modding the game already. . .

Whips.
Whips are neat but they can't compare to morning stars for shear destructive power. Technically they are edged weapons but in practice the majority of the damage they do is like that of a war hammer, just nastier with severed nerves and arteries thrown in on top. I would love to see gold or platinum morning stars.
