What to do with a werebeast?
« on: February 17, 2016, 11:06:08 pm »

I have a miner who was infected and now turns into a werelizard once in a while. I figured out who it was and walled him off. Does it matter, bad thoughts-wise, if I kill him while transformed or just starve/dehydrate him in dwarf form?

Since they don't need to eat or drink or anything, consider walling him off with all your levers.

Edit: No wait, that's vampires.  Werebeasts can't pull levers during their time of the month.  still, you can wall him off, and if you lose your entire fortress to something, you can still get migrants while he's alive.

I'm pretty new, as far as bad thoughts go, I think it depends on his relationships.  Who is friends with him, or married, etc.

You won't be able to starve/dehydrate him.  He may have problems with lack of alcohol, but he won't die.

Nah, just keep him as a miner.  He'll lose time from work during his special time of hte month, but he doesn't need to take food/drink breaks.  Just set up an airlock system where he deposits stone/ore/gems into a stockpile between two bridges.  When you want to retrieve something, close his bridge and open up the fort side one.  You can even hook both bridges to the same lever, where one opens as the other closes.  It'd be slightly less secure, but more easy to use.

Consider giving him stone detailing too, and have him set up minecart tracks to speed things up.  Carve the tracks to where the ore vein is, have it set to only guide when full.

The other option is military service.  Not so much "send him out transformed" but the fact that transformations 100% heal the dorf.  Damaged nerves and severed limbs will regrow- no more crippled useless military dorfs! He either dies or bounces back 100%.  Although its not very useful to do this with just one were-dorf.  You usually build a squad first.  You can safely infect others if you lock them in a cage-trap filled room.  When someone goes unconscious, they lose their trap-avoid status.  So dwarves that get attacked and give in to pain get protected by the cages.  They can still die or fail to get infected... but its your best way to spread infection with low mortality.

Sadly, that won't work, or at least not without some additional machinery.  A lever doesn't toggle a bridge's state.  It sends an "open" or a "close" signal, so both bridges will open/close from the same lever pull.

You can have one of them set to retract, used as a floor hatch.
