So now that a human joined my military...
« on: February 17, 2016, 10:25:24 pm »

Enjoying 42.05 so far.  I just granted 2 petitions for a Goblin and a Human wanting to be soldiers in my military.
Sounded like a good idea until I realized something.  I can't make human sized armor.

Fortunately, my fort is in the range of 2 towers providing a steady supply of large clothing to equip for now. I generally have a policy of making all armor and weapons used to defend my fort.  This fort has a stupid amount of flux - I melt down any armor or edged weapon that is not made of steel and anything iron gets upgraded.  I got lucky receiving with a migrant that was almost a legendary armor smith so my drunken defenders love putting on their armor.  No love for my female human in the squad.

Since we've never been able to allow humans to move in, I'm guessing that we don't have a way to say make a large helm vs make a helm.  But this is DF and even after playing this game for years you find out you missed something you should have known.  Is there a way change the size of the requested wearable in the game.

Assuming there is not a way to do this >  Do we need to add the ability to do this if we are now able to grant residence/citizenship of other races in the fort?  What happens if you have a human gain citizenship the fort and then make that human an armorsmith?  What size armor will be created?

Its totally possible and actually very easy. Designate an article of clothing/armor to be made, then look at the order in the workshop tasklist and press 'd' for 'designate'.  You should be able to specify species from that screen.

The ability to create various sizes of armor was introduced together with petitions, so it's fairly new. Unless you use the 'd' command to change the size, everything produced in the fortress is dwarf sized, regardless of who performs the job (the default is basically "produce steel helm (dwarf sized)").
And I readily admit I was confused initially and didn't realize the 'd' option had been introduced.

Word to the wise with designating armour sizes, not all creatures are listed on there. The best you can do is compare the sizes roughly to creatures equivalent to them. This is particularly important for custom races/creatures.

Example - Polar bears are about the size of a troll (not literally speaking but in RAW terms) therefore trolls will be able to fit in polar-bear man sized armour and polar bear men should be able to fit in troll armour/clothing.

A chart of size can be found here for reference, besides digging into the raws and pulling out info on what 60,000 (dwarf size) is compared to a human's (70,000) size.

It technical stands for "detail," but it does work.  You have this huge list you can filter through to select... I think its "f" by default.  So d->f->hu (for human) hit enter twice.  You have now queued up large equipment! Sadly you can't toggle the smithy to do everything like this, so you have to mark every single job individually.  Or, if you are fishing for masterworks, just put everything on repeat and cancel as you get the masterwork messages.

I'm glad I asked now.  Steel armor for everyone!
