So i cant get romanticly involved unless i remove that tag? Do i have to just remove the tag or do i have to put something else in its place?
Orientation flags are booleans: indeterminate/romance_male/marry_male/romance_female/marry_female
You'd have to set to marry the gender you can reproduce with. I don't know if illegitimate children are possible, but how can you raise a family if you're living in sin?

Anyway, that has to be set in the nemesis record so it will be valid when you retire. Setting it in your unit record won't do anything because you don't have the means in gameplay to romance or marry anything.
So i can tear people a new one, gouge their eyes out, eat their heart but it suddenly becomes a sin if i want to get laid no strings attached?
Dwarf fortress is weird.

I was being facetious; DF doesn't care who you fuck, but the OP said he wanted a family. Fortress dwarves have romantic affairs, and I think I recall a child being born from the relationship, but my memory is too vague to say for certain. Maybe that's where adventurers come from; we're only parentless by law, but we're all the love children of someone and someone. Or maybe the unwanted love children.

Dwarf fortress is weird.

Romance and stuff like that is planned for adventure mode, like many things :)

In fort mode:
But dwarves/animals/everyone else need to be in contact (1 tile away or less) to reproduce now, so its closer then it was. Dwarves need to be in a  relationship and animals can just reproduce with whoever.

well there are cases of lovers having children but basically adventurers are kinda not interested in romance, I learn this the hard way all the way back in .40d but that was mostly because adventurers HAD no social skills or traits to talk to others to even become friends with. now you can make friends if you retire then switch to fort mode,
but if starting a family you want, you might have to do what I had to do... ignore the relationship romance all together and change the adventurer into a Pet/tame animal and then get them knock up that way.
I don't know if toady one orientation for animals means that process is out of grasp now but I'm going to try every dumb thing in the book of df breedin to see if it's doable Vanilla.

you could just grab dfhack and set romance and marriage that way.

Currently adventurers can and do get romantically involved when they are retired (they are treated like any other hist fig and simulated while you play now) and yes, they get married and can have children. But you cant do it while you are in control.

Hm, so there's a chance of romance and marriage if set to 'indeterminate'. But I think setting the marry flag to the necessary gender would improve the odds of spawning.

So in theory i could retire a emu man and emu woman to my fort and breed an army of emu warriors?
Also how do worm men reproduce?

Adventure mode control, and toady said he added it when he released the 40.01 release, so its been in there awhile.
Its also in the df talks about the 40. whatever release. And I doubt he removed it since then.

So that's all going to go in sometime. We just have to get through the various hurdles of getting a spouse, and doing the time-forward motion, and stuff like that. And we've gotten quite a bit further with that now. I mean, your retired adventurers can already get married now.
Rainseeker:   Oh.
Toady:   They can go off and just act like regular people and all retired adventurers are single. (laughter)
Toady:   It's probably one of those times where people are going to want to put in options for how they act when they retire, or whatever. Run over to the goblins and get married or whatever.
Rainseeker:   (laughs) Get married to a goblin chick, yeah.

^ so they should be able to .

Also, you know how you can randomize your characters appearance now? Toady did that specifically so they could have children in world activation. He said that aswell.
(They needed a "genome" so that their kids could inherit properly since there was some weirdness before that.)

Sounds like we need to do !!Science!! on this subject of dropping an adventurer off in retirement and twiddling thumbs until RNG gives them a family.

hmm probably didn't work in 40 for me as 40.xx didn't have inter race fort settling which meant if I wanted to retire an adventurer at a fort for setting up raising a family, I had to do that with the same race, on top of group and civ.
also I was dfhacking it up so I didn't test out.

I agree!

he also said this:

Quote
Rainseeker:   Now does he keep all the skills he might have had during play on Dwarf Fortress, or...?
Toady:   Yeah. Yeah, he keeps everything. He'll probably just drop a sack. I don't remember how it works, if he just drops all of his items or whatever, because dwarven citizens don't carry backpacks filled with meat or whatever. Goblin heads or whatever weird things people put in their backpacks in Adventure Mode. But the skills are the same. The name's the same, the wounds, the scars are the same. Everything that's tracked on a unit is tracked, everything that gets saved is saved, there's just no difference between adventurers and dwarves.

cross breeding kinda works.
I done this with ... spending 2 months in fort mode with a bunch of dwarfcats or what I call dwarves with an interaction that transforms them into cats,
the interaction had a side infection for humans so the human cats could have interbred with the dwarf cats and gave birth to some weird Cat dwarves which is basically a cat turn dwarf with genetics of humans spliced in.
all this because I was trying to get an dwarf adventurer to have a child so far all the Dwarf cats in the fort are screwin But the adventurer so might be something.
oh and there was one report of an half dwarf half fireimp back in the 40.xx era but that wasn't an adventurer but a normal dwarf lady finding hots for a fire imp in fort mode.
