What do I do?
« on: February 16, 2016, 01:10:55 am »

So I understand its like a sand-box adventure mode, but with the quest system pretty much replaced by a "rumor" system. What am I supposed to do? Do I really need to get my RP on to have a lot of fun with adventure mode? Also, maybe after a few questions are answered I can figure it out for myself..How do I properly do "quests" such as "Thieving scum have a hamlet called meadbread". Do I just go in and kill every kobold in the hamlet? Also how do I properly tell anyone that I saved the hamlet?

Having a lot of fun taking a break from fortress mode, but Im just so confused.

It's kind of hard to tell who's who, but you gotta go with your gut feeling on who to kill. After you've killed who you think is the target, talk to any villager and bring up the 'rumor' that you've slain the target (If you're not sure on their name you can examine their corpse, I usually take a token to remind myself later). Whether or not a projectile of phlegm is fired in your general direction will tell you if what you did was a good thing.

If you're after a more traditional style quest, become the hearths-person of a noble in a village or town and ask them to fulfill your duty (You might have to have already killed some beasts to be granted the honor). After you've gotten a task you can press 'Q', 'a' to view the 'agreements' page of your quest log, here you'll see any quests given to you by your lord.

Ask about troubles.
Ask for directions to whatever random place comes up on the dialogue screen after you asked abuot the beasts or whatever.
Murder endangered species great beasts.

While killing humans can get kinda dodgy, this will always work. Nobody minds if you kill a bronze collossus, even if they worship it.

Things are much cleaner now, you kill bandits and people know they are bandits now. If you want a traditional quest kill some bandits and either A: show the lord a cut off body part of the dead bandit
B. Spread a "rumor" about how you killed it (to the lord or any villager)
C: tell a story about it (to lord or any villager, in the town you want to become a hearth for)

The rumor if you tell a villager will take some time (an hour or 2  or sometimes a day )in game time to spread throughout the village (just like irl in a small village).

Then ask the lord to become a hearthperson then ask for a duty or service and they will give you a quest agreement. Of course it is sometimes about enhancing your lords social status, you can choose weather or not to do it)

Forget vidrogame logic the rumor/agreement system is much more realistic).

You don't have to kill things df is a fantasy world simulater you can choose to run off and make a living as a traveling bard/artist if you wish aswell and the consensus is that it is very fun to do so.

You could even just play as a peasant and get a room at an inn pay rent and live your life as a legendary bone carver, in some city while building your fortune and even buying furniture for your room the world also remembers your art btw so you might see it pop up in fort mode or even end up with some of the goods you made at your fortress since trade is simulated.

In the end it's a sandbox game.

Hell you could even JOIN a bandit faction and rob people to make a living/ get famous that way.

Alternately, be a really good performer. You can earn fame and respect really fast by putting on legendary performances. "Great" skill level is enough to get legendary moments regularly during a performance (ie "You dance flawlessly, like someone out of a legend!")

If you are a Great storyteller, you can have a legendary performance in which you tell the tale of your exploits, whether that be bandit-slaying or telling a story about how good a storyteller you are.

Dance is extremely easy because it relies on so many attributes needed for adventuring, Agility, Kinesthetic and Spatial Sense in particular. I think everyone puts something into Agility to start with.

I wasn't aware this was a thing. Do you mean there is actually a dialogue option for it, or do you just remove a random bit from your pack and traipse around a Civ with it in your hand?

Yep, you can also drop it in front of someone. But the recognize death via severed bodypart thing has been in since 40.01

Hmmm, nobody has commented on the random arms and ears and guts in my teeth, but I only drop them when I find a new target to bite. Gotta try that out now.

Can you buy a house in the world or just an inn room? Id love to have my own plot of land to raise a family on.

Not yet, but like almost everything else you could possibly think of to do in a fantasy world, it's planned.

If you make a claim on a habitable site, that's where you will return when you retire. But civilized sites can't be modified, and camps can only be modified with something like adv-fort. Also, adventurers automatically get the 'indeterminate' orientation flag, so your character won't start a family unless you edit those flags to marry someone of the opposite gender.

Orientation flags are booleans: indeterminate/romance_male/marry_male/romance_female/marry_female
You'd have to set to marry the gender you can reproduce with. I don't know if illegitimate children are possible, but how can you raise a family if you're living in sin?

Anyway, that has to be set in the nemesis record so it will be valid when you retire. Setting it in your unit record won't do anything because you don't have the means in gameplay to romance or marry anything.
