Favorite Material to build with
« on: February 15, 2016, 10:08:55 pm »

I am curious what your preferences are

-My favorite building materials are: Bauxite (red AND magma proof? what more do you need), Microline, and Cobaltite (if you don't construct stuff with it, it's useless)

Obsidian and glass.

Though for some reason my obsidian turned into sand sometimes, I guess it's not so bad since sand helps me get my next favorite thing!

Shells are a novelty I enjoy as well.

Because they're renewable, I make a lot of use of glass and obsidian. Usually I go more for green glass earlier on because it's so easy to get at, its magma proof and very versatile. I then use more obsidian later once I get my obsidian factory up and running. For non-renewable stuff, I just love pitchblende. Especially for low value furniture. It's a funky colour, magma proof and super dense. I also like to imagine that sitting on a pitchblende throne would help give dwarven evolution that extra special kick.

I prefer doing defensive structures with cobaltite and/or cinnabar, both because they have nice colors and because the weight of the rocks make combat and traps more deadly.

Whatever gray stone I have the most of. It's easy on the eyes. Unfortunately, my whole dining hall level is situated in marble. This is not.

I use green glass for my above-ground fortress roof and the walls to my cavern stairwell.

If I can't make it the eye-searing color of microcline or ice, I don't bother.

I like building stuff out of ash. Gives things a nice grimdark feel to them.

I like to make all of my walls/floors out of gabbro, all of my doors/chairs/tables out of oak, and all of my windows/pipes out of clear glass.

Black bronze, clear glass, green glass, in that order.  I prefer to dig out my forts in dacite or gabbro, obsidian layers are extra nice but very rare.

Anything that is a different color from the shaded of grey.
Mostly green glass, because it can't be produced indefinitely (and fast with skilled workers), great for large scale constructions. And clear glass, for color varaition and underwater structures.

I have a taste for marble and obsidian.
If there's enough of both, I tend to mix it up.

I like to dig out my fort layers in marble, it gives it a luxury feel.
