Dealing with Tavern Brawls?
« on: February 15, 2016, 05:10:51 pm »

Has anyone got some way to counter these?

In my most recent fort, I lost about 20 dwarves just now to a disagreement caused by some poet. It escalated into a fully fledged loyalty cascade that ripped the fort in half.

Is there some way I can prevent or mitigate the damages caused by disagreements?

i dont think that taverns are really worth the trouble, but heres a few things that helps reduce their lethality

#1 featherwood floors and walls
damage by getting whacked into something has something to do with density and weight, featherwood is the lightest thing in the game so its the safest material

#2 armed guards, have some soldiers there to straight up kill trouble makers, you might loose some dwarves to your guards but it should be less than if it went unchecked

#3 just dont serve booze, your tavern will still get guests, and your dwarves will still be entertained by poets, musicians and dancers, but they wont be drunk

Ive noticed barkeepers are a big cause of problems.  They'll keep serving up alcohol until people start dropping dead.  When the dancefloor turns green or theres frequent fights I activate their squad.  When things calm down I put them to inactive.  Might want to add your in-house performers to it too, cause theyll serve drinks if a barkeeper is unavailable.

Also you could also probably use burrows to keep your violent citizens out of the bar.  I had a dwarf that just loved to egg people on.  He got in so many fights he mustve had at least 6 infections on different parts of his body.  It was the other guy who always threw the first punch, so I let him stay.  I tried to keep him fit with some wrestling but bloodloss finally got him.

#1 featherwood floors and walls
damage by getting whacked into something has something to do with density and weight, featherwood is the lightest thing in the game so its the safest material
A quick material breakdown, by name, density, and availability:

Featherwood -- 100 -- Good non-freezing biomes
Candlenut -- 140 -- Any tropical forest
Adamantine (raw or processed) -- 200 -- Any embark more than 2x2, most 2x2 embarks, some 1x1 embarks
Kapok -- 260 -- Tropical moist broadleaf forest
Willow -- 390 -- Around water, pretty much any non-freezing biome

Most other woods are 600 density, with some being a bit heavier or lighter. Glumprong is the only above-ground tree with a density of over 1000.

Subterranean woods:

Tunnel tube -- 500 -- caverns 2-3
Nether-cap, -- 550 -- cavern 3
Tower-cap, fungiwood -- 600 -- caverns 1-2
Goblin-cap, spore tree -- 600 -- caverns 2-3
Black-cap -- 650 -- caverns 2-3
Blood thorn -- 1250 -- cavern 3

So, in summary?

Candlenut if you've got it, otherwise the common willow or cavern 1 woods. Featherwood and adamantine don't need to be remembered.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Don't serve booze. Goblins in general seem to cause issues for me.

I believe an embark has to be 3*3 to guarantee the presence of an adamantine spire, so 3*2 won't be sufficient, but if your embark is square the next one up from 2*2 is 3*3.

Anyone knows is it possible to make/change a drink that would be considered a drink that can be served in taverns, but does not give alcohol effects?

No, like removing a tag that is reponsible for inhebration (assuming it exists) from, say, prickle berry wine in raws.

Set up a mist generator over a pit in the middle of your tavern.  Voila, a vomit well.

What's the densest material I can make my floor out of, bar a certain nigh-indestructible stone? How can I improve the lethality of my taverns? I never seem to get anyone serving alcohol or starting fights in my taverns, no matter how much alcohol I give them, tavern keepers and performers I assign and rowdy races I insert into the fort.

Is it too much to ask for these literal hundreds of poets to start trying to kill each other?

So basically the Mountainhomes is now sending complimentary cheese dip with every caravan.
A named spider who died centuries before I even played was helping rescue kids I had in fact rescued.

That's not what they meant by "Dead Poet's Society".

BTW, Platinum and native platinum are tied for densest normal materials, at 21400 kg/m3.

I must be lucky because I never saw a brawl turned into a civil war.

Rose gold is always available from the dwarven caravan, being an alloy. Density of 19320, not far behind platinum.
