Cripplingly severe allergies to The Outside World is what I've been thinking.

Name: Gerald Thomas

Gender: M/M/cis/straight(probably)

Age: 15/freshman

Description: Gerald himself is about 6'0", with dark-brown to black hair and piercingly blue eyes.  He has pale skin.

Disability(ies) (yes it's required): Gerald is extremely allergic to anything that isn't the house he's lived in for his entire life, or his elementary(-equivalent) school.  On the first day of junior high (or equivalent), he left his house to head for school and had an extremely severe allergic reaction 5 minutes out.  He was barely able to breathe.  His parents were unable to homeschool him due to their jobs, so, instead of basically drugging him into nigh-insensibility with immunosuppressants and hoping he would be able to go to school like that, they got him a telepresence 'bot.

Clubs: Robotics, appropriately enough.

Other: His parents moved to (somewhere ~5 minutes away from Yamaku) when he was about 1.  Thus the name.  He also has the vestiges of an American accent.

The telepresence robot has a couple things that aren't really standard for the standard screen/optional-motorized-webcam-onna-pole version.  Firstly, it has two arms, side-mounted, with some sort of rudimentary haptics/feedback system.  Secondly, it has a scanner attached so Gerald can scan in paper assignments and print them on his end.   Thirdly, the 'screen' is a detachable tablet (running Android/Linux) that can run the actual robot with Bluetooth or something.

He actually built the arms himself over the years, though everything else is stock parts.

The robot's description isn't very clear. It's a given he can see the school through it, but can anyone see him through it? Because otherwise, teachers have no way of making sure he's paying attention apart from calling on him for every question.

Yes, it shows his face.  It can also show his desk.  That's what the tablet is for.  As well as a backup camera.

Those arms are very likely to be clunky and hard to operate, judging by a) who built them and b) how hard it is to control a 'bot arm anyway.
Plus, how is he only allergic to things not in certain places?

It's a decent enough character, but it requires a bit more detail, or OOC explanations at the least. Witholding judgement for a bit.

Maybe he had help, maybe he had Internet tutorials.  But mostly they're for opening doors and picking up papers.  And plugging in to the wall outlets.

The syndrome exists, I just can't remember the name of it.  Or if it has a proper name.

Let me look at that, but gut feeling says probably no.

His immune system is far too active, not far too inactive.

And, I'd like to point out that he's had, y'know, years to build the arms.

And that still doesn't explain why it's only his house and elementary school. I can think of explanations, vaguely, but don't know.

He's had 5+ years of practice.  I'm not saying they're necessarily as good as actual hands all the time, but they're not going to require DEX rolls for normal school tasks.

He's allergic to Unfamiliar Things, basically.  Like, if he had a food he's never eaten before that's not made of foods he commonly eats, that would cause some form of reaction, though possibly not to as great a degree, if he wasn't Extremely Careful.  I don't know if there's a word for it.
