Dwarf made rivers, and fishing.
« on: February 11, 2016, 10:10:17 pm »

Hi there, random issue here.

Now previously in my DF career I've either connected ponds together with "rivers" or diverted actual rivers/brooks into safer areas for fishing/water demands.
I know most players don't bother with fishing at all as farming so so powerful, but I like to do it sometimes as "something else" to mix up food supply, or just give me something else to plan into forts for my own entertainment.
But I tried doing it in a fort just recently, and it didn't work.

I know I've been able to fish off the portions of rivers I've dug before just fine (at least I think), and this river is full of fish. But when fishing the channeled portions, I always get nothing. Has something changed that I do not know about? Or did I perhaps do something wrong (as I fed the river through some fortifications and over closable drawbridges into the fort. Do fortifications stop fish from moving? The other channeled portions outside the fort are also non fishable.)

I'm guessing this is what happened:

Artificial ponds are considered to be the same as Murky Pools - you'll only catch pond fish from them (i.e. turtles). If you want to catch river fish, you must fish from the river's original tiles (or perform some DFHack trickery to mark your new tiles as being part of the river).

I did this in my fort, and basically what Blue Dwarf said happened. It treated my artificial river as a pond, and I only ever got turtles out of it (which wasn't really an issue cause of the free shells to craft/decorate with)

Strange thing is, when I first filled the channel with the river (which was probably in late winter, cause I connected the river and the channel when it froze for a couple weeks during midwinter), the dwarves tried fishing from it and it said "there is nothing to catch in the eastern swamps" or something like that. Then a month or so later, they tried again and amazingly they were able to fish out of it.

Now it's winter again, and they again said there's nothing to catch. I have a feeling that might be because the surface ponds were briefly frozen, so naturally they couldn't be fished from. I'll wait till spring and see how that works.

Edit: Thank goodness for this thread. I pulled the wrong lever and nearly flooded the entire fort, good thing this made me check the fishing zone (currently covered in 7/7 water, with a pot of raw turtles floating around)

Edit2: Ok once spring returned, the turtles returned as well. So I guess the channel shares the supply of turtles with the surface ponds.

Aha TY blue dwarf, thats probably it. Guess since it doesnt actually connect to any ponds in this case it was never "filled" with pond turtles or such.

Guess I'll have to get fancy and dam the river and build up the protections around there.

It doesn't need to be connected to any of the ponds. Mine isn't, anyway, and is still treated as as a pond by the game.

I think the vermin fish populations are shared between all the ponds (even if they aren't connected) as well as any artificial rivers/channels which are also treated as "eastern swamp" etc. for the purpose of fishing.

I guess if you aren't getting any turtles it means that your map doesn't have any. Maybe you could try getting your dwarves to fish out of the surface ponds and see if they get anything.

Those ponds aren't getting anything, even the ones far off from the fort, so that might be it.

Oh well, went and built a nifty little drawbridge/tower rig over by the river that includes fisheries, a guardhouse, and all the bells and whistles.

Perhaps after the next update I'll muck around in DFHack and make all offshoots of the "river" to also be "river"
