Imperium
IC-LINKIn ancient times, comets were oft though of as ill omens, heralding death and despair. Though such beliefs had mostly disappeared in the Empire, the appearance of a large fiery trail did not fail to elicit widespread panic, for it was not an ordinary comet, but remnants of a Battleship of Imperial Armada, heralding the coming of an era of civil war.The era or civil war appears now to have come to an end, or at least a temporary pause of hostilities. The six of you were important leaders in the war, and one of you even managed to capture the Imperial Throne, and controls the Imperial sector. The rest of the Empire has been divided among each of you, and perhaps now the hardest of your task begins. To maintain and consolidate your power, and rebuild from the damage of the last civil war.
For though peace may have been restored to the core of the Empire, in practice, large parts of it are in ruin. The Imperial fleet has been decimated, many irreplaceable ships lost to battle or desertion. The core planets all bear the scars of war. Public Faith in the Empire has been shaken, in the outer sectors, the Emperor rules only within the weapon range of a patrolling Imperial ship, a rarity in these days. In large parts, the Empire has become stuff of legend.
AuthorityThe position of Emperor is no longer as absolute and sacrosant as once used to be. In fact, for the first time in aeons, the lifespan of the Emperor is now lower even that of the lower classes on the Imperial Capital.
There are 2 types of Authority. Personal and Imperial Authority, personal Authority is relevant to anyone directly under your command, including your own sector (provided you are indeed, present). Imperial authority is the fame of the Emperor (and others) through the Imperium. A famed hero of the Empire may win over the personal troops of a despised governor.
When faced with conflicting orders, it's usually those with higher authority who win out, though the specifics of the case matter a lot. Usually, the first one to break the status quo looses out.
DomainsThe Imperium, even now, stretches over a large amount of planets, each possesing numerous resources. In effect, and therefore the industrial effort of these many planets is not divided by product, but by a general technological, tiered from 1 (mostly raw materials) to 5 (the most advanced technology).
Likewise, planets(or anything with a population really) are divided into tiers, for ease of management. Ranging from small mining outposts to multi billion planet.
Higher tier planets have a tendency to require the import of resources from a lower tier planet.
TechnologyTechnological progress in the Imperium has been far from stellar in recent times, moving at times backwards, while other times old technologies were recovered. Technology needs a constant investement of resources to maintain. Without those, the infrastructure basis and other requirements tend to crumble, and the Empire is left with relics they can no longer operate and understand. Already, several such systems exist.
In addition, technological systems are highly localized. Knowledge of hyperdrives has floundered in the outer periphery, while still being prevalent within the Imperium. Often, certain objects which have broken down completely on one world through neglect and lack of knowledge, are still fully understood, or even improved on another.
WarIn the Imperium, fights are fought amongst the stars. Ground force, are defacto, little capable of resisting an enemy they can not reach, and who can destroy them and their entire planet in rapid fashion. Perhaps, in the future, that may change, but for now most planets tend to surrender if their defending fleet is destroyed or absent. If they do not, the planet is usually put an example for others.
Imperial fleets are characterized primarily by 3 values. Attack, Defense and mobility. Attack and Defense are self-explanatory. Mobility is used in determining which fleet attacks first. All three can be effected by commands given in battle.
A battle, following Imperial standards, consists out of multiple seperate forces, each executing their tactics in turn. A wise distribution of forces is needed, as is a proper choice of tactics.
Even in war though, the value of a ship is recognized. They're seldom destroyed, and destruction of the enemy fleet is rarely required to win a battle. From experience of previous wars, it has been shown that the average capital ship tends to age about 150 years, and has fought in several different conflicts often multiple times on different sides.
The FallThe Imperium is not one of it's most stable states, and is fact, according to some, dieing. Your action may have effect on the rate of that decline, and perhaps, through great effort, reverse it. The general decline of the Imperium means that you'll likely have to deal with a variety of crisises, both from within and from without, both caused and prevented by players. In addition, the well being of the Empire may not always benefit an individual player.
