Ghost in the shell: elysium edition: OOC thread
« on: February 09, 2016, 03:28:28 pm »

Hello, welcome. I am pancaek, up until now you'll really only ever have seen me in the rtd subforum. Today, I'd like to try my hand at something slightly different. You see, I would like to try my hand at something that isn't quite as dependend on the whims of rngeezus, or at the very least something that encourages roleplay. A little more freeform, if you will, where your success doesn't depend so much on the roll of the dice, but more on the abilities of your character. I am, however, having a hell of a time finding a nice system to do so. My best suggestion so far would be a really light variant of fudge dice, going something like this:

Spoiler: tiny system (click to show/hide)

Now, on to the main course, the setting. I'm frankly starved for some ghost in the shell like cyberpunk. This means Human augmentation, hacking, netsurfing, ai's and all of that good stuff. If you've ever seen anything ghost in the shell or played deus ex, that's what we're going for. I'll also be incorparating some elements of other franchises, most notably the space station from elysium where the 1% lives. I'm also mentioning metal gear, because if you ask me questions about how a particular tech works, all you're getting is technobabble. I ain't no scientist. Also, I feel like the metal gear franchise has a nice thing going where they can be tounge-in-cheek and not too serious from time to time.

Spoiler: more background (click to show/hide)

The idea is for the players to be a group of friends/coworkers, mostly so that we don't have too much splitting up the party. I'm perfectly fine with small groups or even lone players doing their thing, so long as it's all within the same city or so. It gets hard to keep track when one guy is getting bushwacked in africa, two people are getting arrested in detroit, all while two other guys are getting scammed on cheap augs in China. I may railroad you into a certain situation to start with, but what you want to do after that is up to you. Just try not to just work 9-5 jobs in cubicles, unless that's really your thing.

So, speak up if you have any thoughts about the system, questions about the setting or if you feel like this is something you might want to play.

EDIT: added some background, and the signup sheet for if you feel like making a character already.

It's Cyberpunk, don't worry.

The Oasis of East Chinamerica: Monopol

Set after World War 3, China has conquered The United States, making it the second part of its massive empire, turning into the collective nation of Chinamerica, West being China, and East being America. The war torn ruins are led under iron-fisted democracy, intent on keeping its power strong, by keeping the people under constant surveillance and strict law. Those, that are of the main nation, however.

Enter... Monopol. Built from the ruins of New York City by businessmen and entrepreneurs, kept by the government as V.I.P.O.Ws, Monopol is the Hong Kong of East Chinamerica: part of the nation, but its own entity. Led by the sharks of industry, those who have the blessing of living in Monopol have near complete freedom to do as they please, as long as they provide a yearly offering to Chinamerica proper. With such freedom, however, comes the absence of security and law. With the closest thing to law being the hired thugs of corporate bureaucrats, in Monopol, it is a dog-eat-dog world, with the highest risks holding the highest rewards, but always at a cost.

As for technology, it can be as Cyberpunk as you want. Robotics, VR, Genetic tinkering, however you want it.

Sounds interesting. Might need to work on the numbers though. In your system example, a Gunslinger (3) would only have a 5/81 chance of failing at all, a 6% chance of failure, which is low enough that it might not even come up in a short game. Any sort of optimization means that characters *will* succeed at the majority of their tasks even assuming that 3 is the max.

Hmm, that's a problem. The idea is indeed that characters that are good at something should have a pretty high chance to succeed at that particular thing. But only a 6% chance at failure is just a bit too high, I agree.

welp, back to the drawing board for another system it seems.

I'm going to be honest, china conquering the US just doesn't seem like something I'd like working with. I do enjoy my global superpowers to stay where they are. The whole monopol free for all zone is neat, though I had planned to have something like that in different locations. Namely, the entirety of Africa, the lower wards of Hong Kong (just like deus ex, a two tiered city) and the literal underground of Japan. Conversely, I had planned to make The US a pretty heavy police state.

Hmm, maybe keep the -4 to +4 spread, but instead of aspects defining the starting value, they merely add extra dice to the pool and you get to keep the highest ones? That might work out, I think. Maybe?

I don't really have the time to calculate the odds for it right now, but that might work. At the very least, you are looking at enough of a decrease to not make failure impossible.

I think I'll go with this then. If it turns out to not work quite well, we can still change the system later.
