Hello, welcome. I am pancaek, up until now you'll really only ever have seen me in the rtd subforum. Today, I'd like to try my hand at something slightly different. You see, I would like to try my hand at something that isn't quite as dependend on the whims of rngeezus, or at the very least something that encourages roleplay. A little more freeform, if you will, where your success doesn't depend so much on the roll of the dice, but more on the abilities of your character. I am, however, having a hell of a time finding a nice system to do so. My best suggestion so far would be a really light variant of fudge dice, going something like this:
Every action rolls 4dF, coming up anywhere from -4 to +4. -4, -3 and -2 are absolute fails. -1 fails but not too badly (You fail, but...). On a 0 you do not manage your action, but don't suffer much consequences. On a 1 you succeed, but barely (You do x, but...). On a 2 you succeed in your action, period. On a 3 you succeed flawlessly and with great finesse. On a 4 your succeed your action so well it will dazzle your friends for years to come.
Characters would, instead of stats, instead have aspects à la FATE, which gives them extra dice to roll. A character with Gunslinger (3) would start any action reasonably involving gunslinging aspect at 4dF+3dF. He would then keep his highest rolls, so +1's first, then +0's, then -1's. The maximum a character can have in any aspect is +3 (at least at the start, might change down the line).
Characters would start off with 6 points to spend as they like, barring gm veto of course. They may take addition points within reason, but they will have to take negative aspects of equal points. equipment, certain events and augmentations will add aspects during the course of the game.
Any input or suggestions on this is welcome.
Now, on to the main course, the setting. I'm frankly starved for some ghost in the shell like cyberpunk. This means Human augmentation, hacking, netsurfing, ai's and all of that good stuff. If you've ever seen anything ghost in the shell or played deus ex, that's what we're going for. I'll also be incorparating some elements of other franchises, most notably the space station from elysium where the 1% lives. I'm also mentioning metal gear, because if you ask me questions about how a particular tech works, all you're getting is technobabble. I ain't no scientist. Also, I feel like the metal gear franchise has a nice thing going where they can be tounge-in-cheek and not too serious from time to time.
The superpowers of the world now have their governments physically placed in the space station. The US has become a heavy police state, with the government invading all aspects of life. It produces well made, mass produced augments. Russia has become isolationist, closing its borders. Nobody truly knows what's going on in there. China has continued expanding its industry at a high rate, producing cheap augments of sometimes dubious quality and performing research into all manner of fields. Japan, meanwhile, has focused all of its R&D on robotic augments. It produces the most advanced, and most expensive, augments. Europe does not produce augments en masse, preferring instead to import them from elsewhere. It is home to many think thanks and research centers that develop prototypes and other cutting edge research for the highest bidder.
Some zones have become the de facto proprety of criminal syndicates, giant corporations or both. Actual governments still claim these places as their own, but their presence is close to none. These zones include the majority of Africa, the lower ward of Hong Kong and the literal underground of Japan. Crime and poverty are rife here, but there are oppertunities for everyone.
Everyone is assumed to have a braincase, only the porrest of the poor and those who live completely off the grid would not have these. These allow you to communicate wirelessly with the net, as well as interface wired through two ports in the back of the neck. They can be put into autistic mode to completely cut off communications. Interfacing with the net or machines uses you ghost, which is basically your consciousness/spirit/soul
The idea is for the players to be a group of friends/coworkers, mostly so that we don't have too much splitting up the party. I'm perfectly fine with small groups or even lone players doing their thing, so long as it's all within the same city or so. It gets hard to keep track when one guy is getting bushwacked in africa, two people are getting arrested in detroit, all while two other guys are getting scammed on cheap augs in China. I may railroad you into a certain situation to start with, but what you want to do after that is up to you. Just try not to just work 9-5 jobs in cubicles, unless that's really your thing.
So, speak up if you have any thoughts about the system, questions about the setting or if you feel like this is something you might want to play.
