Bin Confusion

So, this might be a bug...

I've noticed a problem with bins. I tend to start the game by making a big "everything stockpile" that takes everything, and then taking things off of it  as the fortress grows and more specialized stockpiles can be employed.

Trouble is that bins get put together based on the initial stockpile, and then as the stockpile gets broken up, it seems to be that the bins get stuck because the later stockpiles are segregated. So, if there's a bin of flasks and earrings, and I later decide to put flasks by the barracks and earrings by the trade depot, this particular bin just sits wherever it was left.

Is there a way to separate the contents of the bin and satisfy my desire for organization?

Use d-b-d to mark the bin (and its contents) for dumping. Then use "k" to select the bin and "d" to umark the bin for dumping. Now just the contents will be dumped. You might want to make a dump zone nearby first. Wait for the contents to be dumped and use d-b-c to reclaim them. they'll now get put in the correct stockpiles.

Of course, after marking stuff for dumping, and before the dumping happens, a vile force of darkness will arrive and completely distract you, causing you to forget to reclaim everything. This is especially likely if the stuff was food, which will rot, resulting in clouds of miasma right as your dwarves are reacting to the deaths that occurred during the siege. :)

i think if you just disable bins in the stockpile you want them to move to they will take the items out from the bin and move them to the pile, once all the flasks are out of bins you can enable bins in the flask stockpile again

Which is why I never make shared stockpiles. Specialized stockpiles from game start.

Ah, the garbage dump method worked like a charm, though I eventually had to construct an artifact chain to pull it out, since the dumping didn't seem to take (possibly because it was an artifact.)

The "remove bins" technique failed, or took too long.

I see what you mean about stockpiles. May try that next time.

I often make stockpiles where i don't want barrels or bins so I can get a visual read on how much of the item I have. For instance, I usually have a prepared food stockpile near my kitchen that all other prepared food stockpiles take from. If it doesn't allow barrels, I can tell at a glance if I need to make more prepared meals or not. if it allows barrels, I have no idea how many prepared meals I have without checking the stocks screen. If it has no meals, then one or more of the piles that take from it is probably not full. If it just has a few roasts, then My other piles are still full, but I should make some more. If it's fairly full, I'm just fine.

But of course, stockpiles default to the maximum number of barrels/bins, so I often end up forgetting to zero it out until some eager dwarf puts a barrel in there and it gets a bunch of roasts put in it. I've found that just setting barrels to zero at this point doesn't work well to get it cleared out. Dwarfs just don't seem very motivated to remove stuff from barrels/bins, just because you have more of them than the stockpile is set to take. I'm not sure if they won't do it at all, or if it's just a really low priority, I've never had the patience to wait long enough to see it happen. I just use the dump method, which is fairly quick.

But you do have to keep an eye on it, especially with food, or they'll start rotting in the garbage dump. I know that food rots faster in refuse stockpiles, and I suspect it also does so in garbage dump zones. But I'm not 100% sure of it.

Really? Mine don't. Max barrels and max bins remain at zero until I change that.

I generally create my stockpiles as default ones (Animal), which have no bins etc. and then immediately change the settings to match what I want it to be. However, if you create your stockpile as a stone stockpile, it will default to use one wheelbarrow, a food stockpile defaults to taking the maximum number of barrels, etc.

I was suspecting/remembering something like this, and even thought that I just tested it - but my muscle memory is faster than my eyes. I always create stockpile as Animal - default, and then immediately change to the desired ones. Apparently I do it even when I want to do it other way.

Has Toady resolved the problem(s) with bins? I still operate no-bin forts because I was tired of basically losing items into the black hole of buggy bins, but I am now equally tired of watching Urist McHauler move hundreds of rock crowns by hand.

You maybe, but I've never, ever, ever done this.

Is this biome reanimating? I really don't want to know what happens when "absurd numbers of megabeasts" is combined with "reanimating biomes".
