DPRK themed Fortress
« on: February 07, 2016, 02:34:34 pm »

I just started a fortress in a reanimating biome and think Ill make it themed after the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea.  It should be interesting now that happiness from personal property takes a back seat to performances and scholarly pursuits, and temples/religions are kinda featureless but necessary.  I will make a socialists' paradise!  So far I think Ill:

Find the nastiest violent dwarf and make them Baron
Assign everyone to barracks style living quarters, 40 per room.
Conscript everyone... almost necessary with taverns and reanimating.
Maybe a pantheon temple in the sewers?
I might need to execute any scholar who pursues a non-scientific or medical field.

Hmm.... what else?

Export masses of created wealth to the mountainhome to prove the glory of enlightened dictatorship? Including most clothes, food, beds, doors, etc?

Buy all of the weapons?

lol yeah... you cant have containers in shared rooms, so everyone will only have one set of raggedy clothes.  Maybe once a year Ill forbid all the food and get everyone hunting vermin.

Make a particularly rich and nice looking tavern limited to only visitors and the most-trusted performers and cleaners. No other native dwarf can visit it, and no visitor can wander into restricted area (which would be most of the fortress). If he wanders anyway, either disappear him or jail him.

Make sure to seize all the goods brought by non-dwarven caravans. Is the mountain home going to be the China ton your Korea?

You should also make certain you have plenty of chains for "justice" when the citizens fail to meet the dear leaders demands. Perhaps you could make the prison right next to the barracks where your citizens sleep, so at the end of every day they can walk by their imprisoned relatives (obviously no doors that might block their view). I also think a hammerer that uses weapons-grade hammers would be appropriate.
Also maybe make part of the traps in the hall leading into your fort lever-operated spike traps that can be used on citizens who try to escape.

Start huge megaprojects and abandon them halfway through. Jail all performers and writers portraying The State or The Leader in a negative light. Destroy any books not conforming to the official doctrine. Have the fortress guard outnumber the civilians. Produce very little food and hoard most of that away from ordinary citizens. If your citizens aren't starving you aren't doing it right.

Mandates, demands and the justice system are already very DPRK; don't touch those.

Spend lot of dwarfdays on building 5-tile wide roads with stones. Blocks are for sissies. Routes for these highways should go from nowhere to nowhere, only sometimes used by incoming caravans or visitors. Citizens are not allowed to use these paths (build overpasses for them).

Choose a vampire for your baron, dedicate the fortress to satisfying their blood lust (For this I think you'd need to give everyone individual bedrooms, as to give your glorious leader the privacy they need in order to commit the deed). I can't think of a more terrifying authoritarian regime.

Only erect statues depicting your leader. Furthermore execute anyone depicting them in a negative light.

Construct large missile silos intended to flood the surface with magma.

Assure your citizens life is better inside the fortress, you, glorious leader, single handedly protect them from the flesh eating capitalists above ground. I'm not sure if reanimated corpses provide ghosts since they're unburied, if not, exile resulting in certain death may be preferable to execution.

Hell, this sounds like fun. Maybe sometime I'll do the same.

You should not have any trade with the enemies (embargo), but instead threaten them, and probably start wars with them.  IF trading with the elves you should definitely make a point of trading wooden items at every opportunity. As said earlier, food production should be subject to eternal "misfortune" and "bad harvests". Starvation should be the norm (except for the elite), not the exception. You should slaughter all livestock, since having livestock that reproduces is a capitalist practice, and you need the meat for feasts for the dear leader right away anyway.
Bonus points if the "retired" great leader is a vampire on the lose, with the dear leader the acting leader. A bit hard to make him exempt from the injustice system, though.
Unfortunately, there is no way provided to smuggle booze, porn, and luxuries to the dear leader.

I'd probably have the whole fortress overground with the population hunting vermin there, with only mining done below ground, except for the opulent bunker claimed by the dear leader. The overground barracks should have walls, but no roof.

minecart missile tests
execute all dwarves who work too little
everywhere engravings and statues of the leader, but smooth/destroy those that make him look bad
mandatory monthly military parades
not enough food
only allow a select few foreigners
only accept tradde with the mountainhomes (china)
massive overdecorated room and tomb for the leader(s)
remove manager limit (DFhack) to implement 5-year plans for economy, refuse to addapt if something runs out in between
magma moat on the south border
leader should write piles of autobiographies
firing squads and a chain for public executions (build an extra room for those spectacles)
restricted food and booze stocks for the nobility/high ranking military

boy, those ideas came way too fast...should I be worried? :D

Wait for next version where engravings and statues should offer settings to choose what art to create.

And I'd say the victory condition for that fortress is when a tantrum spiral completely destroys it, with the last standing dorf dying from blood loss, dehydration, or starvation.

I think I can set up alot of the food restrictions through burrows... the problem is the inaccessible spam might get overwhelming.  And if I find a friend of the baron to make a mason, I can have him crank out statues... some are bound to be of the glorious leader.

I think I figured out the trick to getting the populace to dance in the tavern more... if theres a drunk dwarf, or someone occupied with telling a story, in the middle of the dancefloor, then they wont dance.  Hitting "l" will show the area is reduced.  So I can make a great hall for the baron without booze and just dancing performers.
