Tips on sparring

Any one got any tips on getting dwarves to spar more often? I can't seem to get mine to do anything...

Well, did you make a barracks and have it in an enclosed area, maxing out the barracks size as much as you can? Dwarves will only spar in barracks, and if it isn't big enough it may lead to no sparring.

Make sure your squads are standing down, they will not spar when on duty (fortunately. They waste enough time on other foolishness already).

My 6x7 barracks has proven large enough, so your 6x30 cannot possibly be too small. It shouldn't be too large either, says the wiki, otherwise the sparrers won't find each other.

Yup, ahead of the game there too. I dunno.. they spar while they're at different skill levels, but not while they're all at the same level. I'd train against the helpless animals, but there no wildlife on my map... so I'm gonna give them all different weapons and see if that achieves anything.

At one time I had all of my peasants (and some of the dwarves with unused skils) turn into wrestlers to spar.  Apparently, they put a serious hurting on one of them.  This guy was bed-ridden for two years.  Got out just in time for my second siege in which everyone died.

First siege, I turned everyone into military for a Zerg rush on the goblins that got in.  The carnage...

I used to have this problem.  Are you origanizing them into squads?  If so, have every military dwarf be in his/her own squad, and set them all off-duty.  That's what was preventing mine from sparring for the longest time...

By 30!? No wonder they're not sparing, they can't find each other...

For the record, I locked two dwarves in a 3X4 barracks, and after stumbling against the walls for a while, they sparred with each other... (I was trying to get my legendary miner (with no soldiering ability at all) to maim the other guy, but he ended up just hurting his wrist or some such)

Also, put a statue garden in the barracks. It speeds up sparring a great deal.

Dwarfs hang around statue gardens when not doing anything. Once they two get close enough they start sparring.

Reflecting on it further... What, exactly, is the issue with a small barracks? The best military I've ever seen was in Sankis' Castlerooter on the Something Awful forums (13 champions currently) and he only had a 4x7 barracks... Perhaps smaller is better...

Well, it depends on how big your military is.  I usually end up with so many military dwarves that they wouldn't even fit all in that room.

Remember homeless dwarves will sleep in the barracks regardless of whether it has beds in it or not.
