Armok is throwing rocks at me...
« on: February 03, 2016, 11:47:25 am »

This should probably be a bug report, which I'll submit next time that I see it happen...

While channeling out a large area of the surface, a cave in occurred. I'd thought that I'd been careful, but sometimes these things happen. Bury the victim move along...

Then, a cave in occurred another time, possibly at the same location (I hadn't look so closely at the first one.) A tree, perhaps? Plug the hole in the floor, rebuild the ramp, be glad nobody was injured...

And then, I'm pretty sure at a point in empty space that was complete devoid of anything, another cave-in occurred, punched a hole in the spot I'd filled in, an destroyed the same ramp that had been wrecked by the previous one. I paused and it looked like the cave in had begun from empty space, though it's hard to tell with all the debris. It definitely hit at the exact same spot as the previous cave-in, possibly two. Luckily no injuries, but rebuilding the surrounding area is rather tedious.

So, if this happens again (and I noticed that before it seemed to happen around the same date in-game) I will definitely make a bug report. But has anyone noticed something like this before? Is it already in the system?

For now, I imagine it's some kind of cosmic activity. Maybe in the future I can try to reinforce the spot and see if I can build enough stuff to keep it frmo punching a hole in the ground. Again.

There's been a few people reporting similar. The theory I've seen is that the game is spawning trees where the ground used to be which are then collapsing and causing a cave-in.

That does make sense. Though it's interesting that the cave in happens in the same location with pin-point accuracy.

Something similar happened in a fort I had in DF2012.  Doubt it is what is happening here, but it could be.

I did an initial cave in to breach the 1 level aquifer in the same shape/size as the tower above it I was building.  Walled the edges off and moved on.  Then cave-ins started happening almost immediately after opening the caverns.  Took me a while to figure out what was going on.

The first cave in I had done had launched mug and dirt all over the place; somehow, some of that mud and dirt was still there, hovering in mid air.  With the caverns breached, spores could take hold in that mud.  The moment they grew into a plant, they realized there was no ground beneath them, and the plant would plummet and cause a decent-sized cave-in.

If this is happening here, use [k] to check the tiles of air above the cave in site.  Should any of them have mud or dirt, I imagine the game will let plants take root there.

its exactly correct, i had the same issue while i was roofing over a place i just dug out for farming
every time a tree grew i got a collapse message
thankfully nobody got hurt all those times, usually there wasnt anyone around

still at 1 death in 10 years (failed artifact due to lack of animal thread, no shearable animals)

Maybe Toady will be inspired by this to make the first natural disaster in the game... METEORS!

That would be the second. He already created dwarves.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Dwarves aren't a disaster; they're a catastrophe.

Is this biome reanimating? I really don't want to know what happens when "absurd numbers of megabeasts" is combined with "reanimating biomes".

Yep, I've been having this happen at one of my fortresses where I cleared away a hill and leveled to be even with the rest of the embark. It does seem to be happening sporadically in the same places where trees would have been. I can provide a save file, if someone wants to look.

That is, I think, exactly what's going on with mine.

And it seems to always happen at the same spot, and at the same time of year, conveniently coinciding with the dwarven caravan. So every time it happens, a chunk of my trading platform gets blown away, some merchants get beaten up (last incident actually killed one.)

Meantime, is there a way I could build something that would withstand the sporadic wrath of the tree gods?

There is one thing you can "build" to withstand a cave-in, and that's a solid block of obsidian.

The other thing you might try is to build something up to where the sky tree is generated to provide something for it to stand on, and thus not fall. This is pure speculation, though.

Can't you construct a solid Z-level of walls to absorb the cave-in impact? Not that I've tried this myself, best to setup a small experiment first.

As far as I understand cave-ins smash constructions, but I haven't done any organized experiments.
