Or cut with edge.

Even though it's not historically the techniques for longsword, if you can find a fencing club/class that teaches saber, that might be a good starting point as well.

Bear in mind that the vast majority of Europeans who wielded longswords over the centuries weren't that versatile or highly-trained. They just hacked at other people with a big chunk of steel. Just like most cowboys knew how to shoot a pistol but weren't exactly masters of the quick-draw or deadly accurate gunslingers.

if they are wearing armor its better than ineffectually whacking them with the pointy end. also relevant video and channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwuQPfvSSlo

Go for the joints in the armor :v

Also whacking them with the pommel isn't actually very effective due to, as mentioned, losing your range ability, and also the fact that as you mentioned lots of armor makes small metal thing not very effective. If you want to can opener them, get a war hammer. :P

its the best you probably have unless you carry multiple weapons around with you. it was a common enough thing to get featured in combat manuals of the time and actually vary effective. hint watch the video.

Now we know why the Swiss mercenaries were really feared....they had that can opener attachment on their knives.  :P

You joke and fairly so, but related to the multi-purpose tool, this is why they used halberds back when the push of pike was still a thing.  Sharp point along the long axis for cavalry charges (though it was no substitute for a proper pike), axes for infantry and enemy pike formations, and a back hook for grappling cavalry.  It's the kind of arms race that makes you end up with the glaive, the guisarme, the glaive-guisarme, the glaive-glaive-guisarme-glaive...oh, sorry, drifting there.

Argh, this again? This is nonsense perpetuated by smallsword and epee fencers of the 18th century (and possibly before that). It is utterly untrue. There is so much wrong there I could dedicate a whole essay to it, but plenty other people have done a better job already so ill just leave it at: People who could afford a longsword and were allowed to carry one generally had a pretty good idea of how to fight with one. There has never been any period where 'people just hacked at other people', except in the magical fantasy realm that is film making.

...

Also, poleaxe is where its at  :P
