Arise, dead topic, arise!

Pixel Privateers was released yesterday. Being the fanboy of Pixel Pirates I bought it immediately. Having nothing else to do due to sickness, I played it several hours in the evening. Judgement so far: pretty fun. It has basically the stuff Pixel Pirates has, except in SPACE. No ship combat, instead you beam down on planets to do stuff. You control a team of max eight privateers divided into five classes (vanguard, scout, engineer, marine, medic). You collect not only money, but as well research which allows you to improve the class abilities of the dudes & dudettes. Your travels are somewhat limited by two resources, matter and fuel - the first being used to beam your folks on planets and to replicate equipment.

My only complaint so far: the privateers themselves lack personality. I wish they had personality traits and backgrounds like in Pixel Pirates that would give them small bonus/malus accordingly. Now there is just nothing to get attached to in them.

I have seen the trailer, but not the game, so my question is: why are they "privateers"? it seems like they should be "explorers", or if you want an exotic word, "conquistadors". Privateers were private individuals people who captured enemy ships for profit (a cross between pirates and a mercenary navy.) They didn't really do any of the stuff in this game (especially now that we know that there's no ship combat/boarding)  ???

They are Privateers because in the first game they were Pirates.

And Privateers sounds similar and is related to Pirates.

So it is a lot like how James Bond is a spy... in spite everyone typically knowing who he is and not immediately kicking him out as not to tip their hand... in some movies.

Yeah, James Bond is not a spy. He's an MI6 assasin. IRL spycraft is all about painstakingly recruiting and/or blackmailing people in enemy organisations over a period of months (or, more typically years) while trying to figure out which ones have been compromised and are actually feeding you bad Intel. It's mostly desk-work.
But I get your point.

Missions are mostly about murdering natives, dissecting them for research and stealing their artifacts so yeah Space Conquistadors would be a more descriptive name. Privateers is obviously chosen for Pixel Pirates connections, tho I guess it could have been Pixel Pirate II: SPACEWARDS HO! or something.

So it's good?  The name reminded me of Pixel Pirates which isn't good cause Pixel Pirates was horrible.  I didn't research it much past that.

It feels sooo weird seeing Pixil Piracy being so maligned on Bay12 O_o

It felt like I was the only one who REALLY didn't like it.

I liked where it was going.  The updates were adequate.  But then it stopped updating, with glaring bugs and balance problems.  It's sort-of-complete as it stands, but it has some harsh imbalances, like your crew getting upset for being out in the rain, but they totally ignore rain and roofs and walk outside and then complain with no way to deal with it.  They were so close to being a halfway decent game...

I thought Pixel Pirates was a fun little game for the low price I got it for. I think Pixel Privateers is a fun little game for fifteen bucks. If it cost 30 or 50 it would be a bad game, but for 15 it is a fun way to waste time. I haven't ran across any glaring bugs, but there are certain little things which could use ironing out. For example, there isn't an auto attack option for your dudes and the privateers lack personality traits from Pirates. I thought the personality traits and backgrounds were a nice way to differentiate between crew, so a shame that isn't in.

I'm surprised you are so negative about PPirates, tho. Especially as I'm usually the first to grumble about unfinished games and stuff.

Well the problem with Pixel pirates to me has little to do with it being unfinished :P

A lot of the problems have to do with the game's concepts and how they implemented them. The game is extremely unforgiving but in sort of the worst way (a anti-fun way) where if you don't know something in advance it kills you which causes an overly paranoid attitude.

"Ohh you activated this object? Well you die. Don't do it next time... or do it... you don't know"

In many ways I think... Less is More applies to Pixel Pirates. It needed to cut the fluff and stupidity... and sort of focus on the prime gameplay quite a bit more.

---

Anyhow Pixel Pirates was abandoned because... frankly... it was a lost cause.

Which is why I have no malice to the developers. There is only so much you can do to save a sinking ship.
