Yes, that is where it came from. But that is all.
No that's not all. "awe" is deeply rooted in "fear". The fact that you want to make it its own thing when it's just an aspect of fear is silly.

Quote from: definition of the word "awe, from Google
a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder.
"they gazed in awe at the small mountain of diamonds"
synonyms:   wonder, wonderment; More
admiration, reverence, respect, esteem;
dread, fear
"we watched in awe"
Now obviously you wouldn't be afraid of a pile of diamonds, would you?
Of course I would. A mountain of diamonds/other large amounts of wealth is terrifying. If you're smart and malicious enough you can crash the world economy with that, leading to the ruin of mankind.
That's how the world should end.

Not really, diamonds are common, they are just slowly leaked into the market keeping the price up.

The De Beers monopoly and their artificial price-fixing has been broken for like a decade and diamonds have still maintained a high price.

Your argument is irrational. Why would you be afraid of ruining a economy because you discovered wealth? More likely, greed would overtake you and you would horde or use it for yourself. Maybe donate some of it if you were good of heart.

I have no context on the discovery of the wealth. I might happen to have been given a tour of the treasure vault of a supervillian, while he monologues about his plans to cause the apocalypse. I might be inside a dragon's lair, in which fear would be great. I might have been part of an archeology dig that discovered this in a tomb, in which case I would fear my fellow workers killing me to gain a larger share of the wealth. The mountain may have suddenly appeared behind my house, which would results in all kinds of fear of several different things.

Suddenly gaining massive wealth makes you a target, not happy. Do you not know the problems lottery winners suffer?

Obviously if you shake it all around, people will notice. Discretion is the key.

You can be only so discrete about a massive mountain of diamonds.

IC is about to go up!

This is fracking awesome, as in, after the Nuclear War Humans are probably going to be very concerned with finding Oil for their tricked out makeshift tanks. PTW
