I have too much Gold
« on: January 28, 2016, 09:35:43 am »

What should I do with all this gold!

Plus a ton that I haven't mined yet. 10x as much at least.

I already have some Goblets:

Any solid gold ideas?

Give everyone in your fortress masterwork gold furniture. Studded with gold, if you're really hardcore.

Pave the surface.

Pave your entire fort.

Pave the caverns.

Pave the HFS.

A billion statues! A zillion coins! All armour is well and truly encrusted, I hope? You've gotta outdazzle the goblins, coming over here all like 'what up I'm such a big shot' with their troll fur cloaks and lignite emblems on their hats and their giant tiger leather thongs.

You can't stud gold with gold, or any metal with the same type of metal.

Turn those gold bars into gold blocks and make roads all over the place.

Mint it all into coins. Use the coins for minecart shotguns. COINS EVERYWHERE

Well, that's good to know

Does it even make a difference? Bars and blocks are of the same value.

I don't know if this is the same with metals (because i'm not metal enough for metal floors), but using blocks means the floors are 'smooth' rather than 'rough'. And rock > block gives like 4 blocks per rock...

"Gold nuggets can be smelted to produce 4 gold bars." according to the wiki.

So 1 stone -> 4 block will be the same ratio, it just takes extra step from converting 1 bar -> 1 block.

Therefore, make gold nuggets no longer economic and let the masons have at it

Yup, you can make "native gold blocks" instead of "gold blocks."

Although it's a metal crafting skill up making gold blocks from gold bars.

I think metal bars vs. metal blocks would both give you a smooth road, since metal bars are not a raw material, although I'd have to double check.  How does it work with logs vs. wooden blocks, out of curiosity.

Do roads get quality levels the same as other designed buildings?  Whether you use native gold blocks or gold bars/blocks would matter because then it changes whether a mason or a metalsmith does the finishing work.  Maybe you want your legendary blacksmith who likes gold to finish the work instead of your adequate mason, so your road is as nice as can be.  And maybe you want to nourish yourself with his impotent anguish when a fat smelly troll breaks his precious masterwork road later that winter.

My preferred use of gold is bins and barrels, along with other metals that aren't weapons-grade. Minecarts, tracks, whatever. All is golden/electrum/whatever.

I pity the fool who has to carry a gold bin full of gold-encrusted or simply golden crap.
