Welcome To:
"Distortion"
A Planetary Colonization/Adventuring Game
It is the year 5037, and you have decided to leave your home civilization to colonize the Super-World Distortion. You, and several other like-minded individuals, have gathered any and all possesions that could be useful, and sold the rest to get enough credits to buy needed equipment. When you land on your new home, you hope to earn fame and fortune alike, but accept that this could be the last stop for you, as it is very dangerous.
This game is a project of mine I've been thinking about for a while, and I wanted to see how you guys like it first. There's some amount of advanced magic, and some advanced tech in this universe, but that's only the advanced races; most have a level of tech similar or less than ours, and any magic races might have figured out semi-controllable teleportation at the most, but not much else from (still-living) races. No one knows what the Ancient races might have achieved, however.
Human: Normally mundane creatures, Humans are varied in the tech department. Some of them are still hunter-gatherers, and others are highly advanced, space-faring creatures who have access to Inter-Galactic Drives, and have used them to explore and map the Universe.
Elf: Elves are incredibly varied in their tech and magic levels, and sometimes even their beliefs. Many are merciful to living things, although some are famous for their cruelty.
Dwarf: A moderately magical race , dwarves aren't generally incredibly advanced by their own accord; many will pick up other's technology and run with it, but most don't know how these things actually work, and once something breaks, they generally drop it and find something else to do fill in the gap left behind.
Your own race: Give me a decent backstory, I'll add it for others to use, and you can be that race.
Mechanics are fairly simple: Leaning more toward realism (you don't have an exact idea of how broken your arm is, but you can tell if it's useless), but also rolling a d20 to find how bad or good of an attempt you made.
Possible Results:
20: Perfect! Either by sheer luck, or near infinite amounts of will power, you managed to pull this off perfectly!
19-18: Amazing! You used your high amounts of skill to do this amazingly well, and this should be effective/ last for a long time.
17-15: Impressive! You got a fairly good result, although you could have done better.
14-10: Decent. You did well, and you could have done much worse, but you also could have done better. You recieved a scratch, you'll be fine.
9-4: Mediocre. You didn't do good but there are worse possibilities. Usually leads to a decent wound.
3-2: Bad. You weren't terrible, but you could have done a lot better. Usually leads to some large amount of pain.
1: Total Failure! You've done so bad, you probably ended up killing someone or yourself.

Backstory: I grew up in the middle of a civilization slightly ahead of Earth in the 21st century, Earth Standard Time. I discovered my love for space when we were contacted by an advanced Elven race, and were propelled into a new era of Inter-Stellar travel. I became a cargo hauler, and decided to help in this adventure when I heard of it.
