The Great Bay 12 Symbol Exam Vol.1
« on: January 25, 2016, 08:00:13 pm »

What kind of PC or device you are using?

If you use multiple on a daily basis, answer all questions for the one that sees the most.

Edit: If you see none, just post none below.

Edit2: If there were several you couldn't see, would you help us further this test? Some posters believe if you download the font OneType or Symbola, and install them you can see all of them.
I have personally installed Symbola(I could already see them all, and there was no change.) This is where I got it, provided by Starver: http://users.teilar.gr/~g1951d/
Does this or adding any other font help you to see more symbols?

Edit3: Feel free to suggest symbols for Vol.2. I expect to be testing a lot of the weather ones since those had mixed results so far just from the ones we sampled.
The goal is to find common symbols that are less known, so if I can't even display it properly it probably wont make the cut unless a lot ask for it, but feel free to try anything.

I figure at some point, you're just gonna run outta fucks to give and just off yourself whenever you get hurt at all. It's not like there's any downsides to it. Hangover? Suicide will fix that. Stubbed your toe? Suicide. Headache? Suicide. Papercut? Suicide.

To give it a challenge, I used this machine with XP (yes, I know), meaning that IE8 wouldn't display a lot of the symbols*, but all the other browsers I use on here (various Mozilla-family examples, all of them) show them all 'perfectly' (although note what I say below about scaling).  But that's probably only because I've previously manually added a particular OpenType font, last year, so that I could view one specific web-page that was using new 'standard' symbols a lot.

However, I wouldn't have guessed that most of the dice were dice.  Not at that font size, where the vector-based font definition doesn't always come out so neatly (regardless of non-IE browser used).
Spoiler: Let me demonstrate (click to show/hide)

BTW, as far as social engineering is concerned, you now know what OS and browser most of us use.  (Or at least are using for this example.)  This isn't another "What is your porn name?" thing, which effectively makes you reveal your mother's maiden name and first pet's name to somebody else, is it? ;)

* What still 'leaks through' are: the non-diagonal arrows; the #s 3,4, 10 and 11 in the notes line; both dwarfs smileys; the non-outline card-suits.

What is your porn name?

Spoiler: here's mine (click to show/hide)

Can someone who didn't see them all download OneType font and restart there PC/come back/see if they get a better result?

In case anyone wants to know, I attribute my ability to see the full set to having, early last year, gone to http://users.teilar.gr/~g1951d/ and downloaded/installed the "Symbola" font to make a given web-page actually readable.  (How you install fonts will depend on your system.  I just extracted the fontfile and pushed it into the /Windows/Fonts directory, but YMMV...)

I could be wrong about that solving everything, but I'll leave it up to you to try and see if I'm right.  Personally I don't like the idea of needing such an 'optional upgrade' (going beyond 7-bit ASCII always seemed like a cop-out to me), given that you may then blithely start to use non-backwardsly-compatible characters with abandon, but if it helps fill the gaps that certain older OSes have but newer web-pages already assume you have covered then it's probably better than not.
