No, Independent isn't quite the same connotations-wise as Unaffiliated.  Independent implies a conscious choice to not be part of this organization.  Unaffiliated means that they just haven't bothered.

In this context, the two are interchangeable. If you weren't independent, you'd be either with the Union or with a smaller group of non-Union people and THAT would be your affiliation. Whether or not you could be arsed to join is irrelevant and a little nit-picky.
