I think the skills should depend on the setting.  Gun skills wouldn't make sense in a medieval fantasy game, for example.  What sort of setting did you have in mind?

More like something extremely implausible or impossible happens and this would only be rolled in a dark hour for a character either close to death or Something that would shatter and destroy all they hold dear.
They could try and force a deux ex machina role but it will have a minus to the roll depending on what they want to happen and how ridicoulous or implausibe it is will affect how bad the minus for the roll is.

Well, the setting I had in mind was in an alternate universe similar to our own, with players having just stepped out of a portal.
This would be so I wouldn't have to explain every single aspect of the world at one time and everyone could just figure out how the world works on their own.
Would that work?
