Hugs are not inapplicable.

Agreed. I think I might just try to email the executives in charge of this operational area with my resume and cover letter. Unsure. Suggestions?

As someone who defacto worked in HR, I am offended by the level of stupid found in modern personnel. We wouldn't all anyone a "resource."

It might be a good idea to ask to speak to some other recruiter, though.  You pretty much definitely need to circumvent this particular recruiter.

In a different but related matter, I got a phone call request from a recruiter. Yay.

I did get the "I'm not sure if you're a fit or not. Your resume needs some work...."

I'll take it either way.

I dealt with a much nicer recruiter today, but I can tell she didn't read my materials or correspondence for real estate:

"Is X in your resume?"

X appeared several times in my resume, quite plainly for the basic reader....

Basically she said it made her eyes hurt. I included examples of what I did and for who (as much as I could, thankfully she was cool about hiding client specifics)

It's now a redo job, and I can't help but feel that she and much of the world are shaving off parts of my experience and value.

It is not her fault. This is the new normal, and she is actually attempting to help me, going so far as to take time out of her day to talk to me after work. I am grateful for this, truly. I'm not mad. I'm sad, not at her, but at the situation.

This one, is actually not that bad. It's the situation. I'm proud of the work I did, even at a very young age (college) and it seems that's all getting cut out

Irony: This is the exact opposite approach of the last one who wanted every bloody detail. ???

Think I figured out why this lady is miffed: she's looking at my resume on a smart phone....

Laptop and desktop shows microsoft word as is.

Smartphone reformats to fit the screen. It'd differentiate horizontal and vertical....

So, the damn android phone is making the lines of text wrap around and look wonky....

So instead of nicely indented bulletpoints tailored with text to the page margin edge,  it breaks the line, and forces it to the next one, screwing up the indent and making it look like hell....

....

I can't be the only one with this issue. Any suggestion?

Wait, what? I would be very sad if the convenience of viewing your resumé on a smartphone (as opposed to an actual PC) should have any bearing on whether you'd get hired or not. Her being miffed is the product of trying to take shortcuts here :/

Yes, thank you for coming everyone. This explains why everything is going so well here in sarcastic land. Please collect your puppies and good jobs after visiting the gift shop. Bring a basket to catch the money rain.

Yup. You're pretty spot on. This explains a lot.

What if I send this thing in PDF?

{Please note that this snark and sarcasm is not directed at you Reverie. Welcome aboard.}

PDFs are a lot more rigid with how they are displayed, so that sounds like a plan. Not that it'd 'hurt her eyes' any less viewing on a 5" screen (seriously...)

Yeah, for resumes pdf is definitely the way to go. If she's going to want to use it on a phone, she'll have to scroll around, but it'll keep formatting a lot better than a word or Google doc will.

Also, trying to manually throw headings into a Google Doc from a phone and getting them to actually be at the top of a page when printed is ridiculously annoying.

Yeah, the other thing I've noticed is that sites like Indeed, Careerbuilder, etc, tend to mutilate custom formatting, tables, text boxes, and spacing on resumes when you submit them in word documents.

I saw the email one of those sites generated to a recruiter about the resume file I uploaded, and it looked like an MC Escher piece.

So I'm hoping I can do PDF from now on, though I'm surprised at those who request word documents. Go figure.

Evidently, they want you do to this garbage

(Name of the place you worked, and it's location)
(Your position and the start - end date)

Instead of this:

(Your position, name of the place you worked and the start - end date)

So really, that's just filling and spacing things out and if you ask me, wasting an entire line. Why are people this obsessed with things? Yes, my Resume has a lot on it because I've done a lot of relevant, recent work. If I do this for each of my four rather recent related jobs in this area, then that's 4 lines wasted. This is a position where the person involved has to know what on earth they are doing, and if they don't, then bad things happen.

If they're hiring people just because they have more unused white space on their resumes, then that explains a lot.

I wouldn't hire people who sent me their resume in a Word file. Seriously, it takes maybe 3 seconds to hit the 'save as' button and make it a pdf.

I have never seen places where they need the resume in word (I wouldn't want to work there), usually word and pdf are allowed.

Better yet, make a nice resume in LateX and compile it into a pdf, though that is probably not relevant in your sector.
