Yeah it was, but would you prefer it if it just died?

Shouldn't this have moved to the Community Games & Stories forum with everything else?

I'm glad this got bumped, or I would have never found it.  Awesome story, thanks much.

Wow, thanks to whoever bumped this story.  I just spent the last few hours reading through it. Really impressed me, a great read. I can only imagine what Urist would have accomplished with some Z-axis movement.

I wonder if this story is why everyone uses "Urist mcdwarf" and etc. all the time, I saw a thread the other day wondering about that.  I associated Urist with uselessness because my current fortress has an Urist that I dislike but now that I've read this story I'm a lot more nervous about what he's gonna do...

I've never played the hermit challenge, but this showed me how much fun it could be.

Yep, it's the main reason for "Urist mcuristurist has murdered Urist mcuselessurist" or some such ;D

And that's exactly why I'm posting!

<Ker-BUMP!>

I had no idea. And I'm sure some others didn't either. Almost one year is too long.  This is a true classic.

This should get moved to the story forum and added to the legend list.

When I clicked on dwarf mode discussion, this was not the thread I was expecting to see.

Awesome suprise though.

Me neither, but i'm glad its here, i always wanted to say how awesome i find this story to be. If only i was as dwarven as the one who bumped this thread.

So that's why I got that odd email asking how Urist found all these features on a single z level (and if I could share the seed)... someone bumped the thread recently.

For the record, I did play this in the 2D version. Natural side effect of having written it two years ago.

And yeah, for that guy who mentioned a year ago that the ending was kind of a cop out- it was, but the alternative was no conclusion at all.  Though I got a kick out of the contrast between the black smoke for Urist and white steam for Melbil that the game threw at me, so it wasn't all a waste.

Anyway, rereading this has made me reflect on what a terrible writer I am, and question the judgment of everyone who praised it... but heck, praise is praise, so thanks for it.
