Gotta give Urist credit. All by herself in an empty, corpse ridden fortress surrounded by a jungle full of undead monstrosities, with only demons to look forward to as she strikes the earth.

Brave dwarf.

Yeah, mad. Of course she's mad... we all know that. She's still brave though.

A question: Is it actually easier or harder to run a fortress with just the one dwarf?

I think it depends on the situation really...

I can get food and things like that going very well very easily with a single dwarf, but if I wanted to make anything out of adamantium then I'd find it very difficult to get past the daemon pits with only one dwarf... maybe impossible but I think it could be done.

Oh, it could be easily done with falling drawbridges. They will crush _anything_ that they come down on. Since they can't be destroyed while raised or something like that, it could be considered an exploit. I personally prefer to use fortifications and lots of marksdwarves.

I think quite a few people consider drawbridge walls to be an exploit...

But even with drawbridges getting past the daemon pits would be very hard for a single dwarf... one fireball and its game over while your dwarf is trying to retreat...

Not really, since you can use the raised-drawbridge-as-a-rail method to prevent magma attacks completely.
I admit it would take time to set up, and during some of that time your dwarf is vulenrable to magma attacks, but it would still work. (You should probably use the same method on the cave river and chasm as well, for safety)

Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

I meant that one of the daemons from the pit could... or do they not have fireballs? I thought they did...

Oh, I see what you meant.

Either way a raised draw bridge blocks everything, so that's not a problem.

It would be a problem though... since you'd need to know in advance where the daemon pit is so that you could build the drawbridge and its lever within 1-2 tiles of the pit to give your dwarf time to escape (This is based on my assumption that when you first break into a pit you get an instant invasion from it... am I wrong with that?)

Yes, the demons take a couple of days to get ready before they climb up and do bad things to your bearded little minions. Not enough time to build anything but plenty of time for  your miner to get away.
