Nation Name: Unified Martian Coalition
History and Culture: The Coalition was originally meant to be a short term alliance between stead-holders against the nations of Earth during the Martian War For Independence. Formed from those colony-cities and companies which had remained independent from the Olympian Alliance, the cooperation stemmed from the previous business deals and trade routes that had built up during Mars' colonization. Already on good terms, the mayors, executives and various other leaders concocted a document detailing how an overarching government could be formed in order to deal with the threat of belligerent 'independence' movements and an Earth that had very little tolerance for 'neutral' colonies. Many of the territories within the Coalition valued their independence highly, however, and so it was believed that once Earth had been driven off, they could go back to simply supporting each other economically and occasionally ferreting out pirates.
Unfortunately, it wasn't quite as easy as that.
Post-war Mars was a chaotic and dangerous place to live; the Olympians were placing intense pressure on colonies to join them, and many were worried that a more forceful assimilation might be in the future. An emergency meeting was held to determine how to deal with this. While the matters of the meeting itself are still largely confidential, it is almost certain that the disagreement between colonies, particularly when rivals, was rather vehement, and that it is very nearly a miracle that the Coalition as it's known today was formed by it. The consensus reached was that of extending the original document, both in time and in the powers it granted the central government, particularly in regards to foreign issues and in leniency given when dealing with those colonies that decided to try and reap the benefits of the Coalition's protection without contributing to its ability.
Now, the Martian Coalition is a massive organization, whose civil side is largely involved in regulating trade disputes and arbitrating agreements between its member colonies. The original goals of the Coalition are considered to have been corrupted by some, as it has become involved with pressuring those self-same colonists that the Olympians had been trying to integrate. As it was formed initially and primarily by companies formed for profit and entwined like family, enterprising pioneers who'd succeeded in escaping those terrestrial nations they'd found so oppressive, and idealistic individuals eager to forge a new, better land on the red planet, the government is surprisingly lax on most issues, leaving it primarily to those involved to sort out. The exceptions with which the Coalition deals harshly include monopolistic companies, as dangerous and power-hungry on Mars as they were on Earth, rebels who threaten the ability of the Coalition to respond to outside threats, and tax-dodgers who are seen as free-loaders unwilling to pitch in for the common cause.
Military: Since the beginning, the UMC military has in large part been made up of private security forces, veteran militia, and repurposed police forces. Since the War, however, these have become progressively more organized. The legacy of the Coalition's formation remains firmly embedded into the structure of its military, despite this, and Peacekeeper regiments, as the main fighting arm of the Unified colonies became known, are considered to be on a semi-permanent loan to Coalition government. As the founders of the Coalition, and many of it's leaders, were often familiar with incentive structures and human social behavior (important to running a good business anywhere), they managed to make contribution to the Coalition into a status game; many taxes are voluntary, and more relevantly, having 'loaned' the best equipped, finest soldiers to the Coalition's use has become a competition among most colonies that can afford security forces of their own, resulting in a high standard of service members. The standing army of the Coalition, which 'belongs' to it officially as well as practically, is somewhat more purposeful in it's design, however. Having quickly adopted the moniker of 'Templars', UMC special operations forces are largely made of veterans of the first Martian War, the best of the Peacekeeper regiments, and ex-paramilitary members. Devoted, skilled, and equipped at no small expense, Templars project Coalition might wherever it's needed.
A nominal fleet made up of those repurposed transports, freighters, mining vessels, and security ships left over from the War for Independence is currently being scrapped and retrofitted to more modern military versions.
