lol.  More often than not, Nobles have a few particular items they will always demand.  Just be glad its' something easy ;)  On a related note, a good way to reduce the micro-management is simply ignore him for several months.  Don't fulfill the mandate until it turns red.  You save time, resources, and keep the jerk happy.

I just fulfill the guys Flask-fetish immediately whenever it appears. so I don't have to do it later, I feel like if I wait I'll never be able to fulfill it and then someones gonna get hammered. that or the mayor gets to mandate lava in his room

I have the best sort of ruler, he only demands like 2 scepters (probably because he fashions himself Tutankhamun or something). So my craftsdwarf set to auto-labor is the saviour of the fort every time without me doing anything extra.

It's possible to get a noble with no item preferences whatsoever. At least it was in 34.11. No mandates for anything ever!

And they can ban export, but not melting, and it won't upset them. So you know what to do with the surplus ;)

I hate mandates, and so manually replace my mayor with a non mandating one when the wrong mayor is elected every summer, make sure the noble appointed doesn't have any such stupid leanings, and try to manipulate the selection of a king into a non mandating one.
I also don't implement any injustice system, since I really hate seeing my miners getting clobbered for not finding the nonexistent metals required to make the weapons the tyrant requires.
If you've got sufficient amount of metal you can melt the flasks down to recycle them into new flasks (although you'll have to keep the masterworks ones). This also works for (metal) weapons, of course.
I think a bug that retroactively accused you of selling banned goods when a ban was declared after the trade had been performed has been fixed, so you can get rid of the excess during the brief moments of absence of trade restrictions.
As opposed to deknegt I really don't like the "make crafts and see if the RNG happens to fulfill the mandate" gambles. On the other hand I don't do auto labor.

Hetairos beat me to much of the above.

My mayor mandates bracelets.

Usually in groups of 1-3 bracelets at a time.

I bet that guy's arms are really strong from having to carry all of those bracelets at once (I haven't actually checked the mayor's worn items so I don't know 100%.)
