I really dsislsike the power saving function of my smartphone. By the time my cat is in the right position for a selfie with cat, my phone screen is black and I need to turn it back on. But that makes my cat move away from the desired photo position.

Almost got scammed out of my Steam account. Friend asked to vote for his team in some PUBG tournament, site looked legit and all, asked to login to prevent bot votes, makes sense. Log in normally and then notice Steamguard say the attempt was made from Russia and another was made from Germany moments later. Which makes me flip and logout and reset my password instantly and then deauthorize every device for good measure.

Considering the amount of money I've sank into the damn thing this was a pretty hefty scare if I'm being honest. Spent so long without any real attempts at this that I've kinda grown complacent in regards to safety.

My nephew had his Steam account stolen a few years back. But it took only several hours to recover through the Steam support.

This is exactly what would make the recovery easy. Steam will return your account as soon as you prove that the games were bought using your credit cards (or whatever payment method you used). Items could be gone, but IIRC, they are locked for a week after any suspicious activity.

It doesn't mean that one shouldn't be careful, but it is not as scary as it seems.

I've found the option to automatically lock after some amount of time. The default is 30 seconds and I changed it to 5 minutes, which is the same as the amount of time it takes for my PC to sleep with no input. Having longer than 30 damn seconds makes using my phone a lot more pleasant, I can actually read things without having to keep poking the screen. And it's not like I'm so forgetful that I need it to lock itself so quickly, I can just press the power button.

My brother was just talking about this scam this weekend, when one of his friends got hacked. Said his red flags went off when he was asked to log into his steam account on another website.

I've been given the impression that putting your account info onto a sit not related to that info is never a good idea.

Agh, I've had a random memory of an old kid's picture book where there's a kangaroo as a nurse or somesuch as part of it. Remember her going around feeding other kids, then it finishes with her feeding her own. Had other stories too, but that's the one I remember.

I'm here because I can't find the thing, and it's nagging like a hangnail.

Might need to see if my mum kept our childhood books as little mementos or in case of grandkids.

Bought a game on sale from GOG, Empires: Dawn of the Modern World. Spent the past few hours trying to get it to run. Failed. Well, technically, I can get it to run without doing anything, it's just the it hangs when mousing over most things, except objects of another faction which terminally freezes the game.

Did a bunch of "fixes", the last of which was use Dxwnd to run, except that crashes immediately on launch. I did not want to spend my evening troubleshooting. Didn't GOG guarantee their old games work right out of the install, or did they walk back on that?

There could be a variety issues but also, the game worked for the version of windows, etc they tested it against. At the time they tested it.

My employer is considering layoffs.
My coworker is looking at me like I'm nuts for being careful.

Jesus, of course I am. What is wrong with people....
Yes, it takes slightly longer. By like a couple minutes.
Yes, it's not the single most convenient way to do it. So what? Of course I knew that.
I know and I don't care. The whining doesn't help. For the love of God, do it.

What part of they could fire us so keep your head down and cover yourself do people not get. (Rhetorical).
I just, yes, yes I know you'd rather not care, co worker. It must be nice not to have to.... Ugh.

The constant drive to justify your existence gets exhausting, eventually you stop caring about the consequences even if it rationally, has dire life altering impacts. But it is useful sometimes to have people on board who do not fear firing, because they can be useful for gauging how willing the bosses are to cede better working conditions and wages

Update on this, I did get it to work after installing GOG Galaxy and installing from that.

And then I somehow screwed up the first mission of the first campaign because a stone deposit gave me 2(out of 210) less than it should, possibly because of a misclick.

Last think I wanted to have to tell him after all of this.

You know, one more reason I know there was no creator God, or if there was he's either far from omniscient or omnibenevolent is piles.

"You know what the human body needs? A series of blood vessels around the anus that can swell up, cause pain, and pop when you're taking a shit."
