Toady has mentioned that the intent is that Elven druids can cast magic to shape wood into the forms they want without harming the plant.  Presumably their wooden items are still living and growing, or perhaps the tree they got the wood from simply wasn't harmed (via magic) in the extraction.

They don't do this now, of course, but that's just because magic isn't in yet.

They don't object to wood, they object to wood that was "slaughtered".

Don't they wear wooden armor in adventure mode? (At least they did a long time ago - haven't played with anything but fortresses in awhile.)

You know, in quite a few versions of Dungeons and Dragons, elves don't sleep, they just sorta meditate once in a while.

I also heard that they don't ever pass gas.  No wonders they're so damned arrogant.  It's bad enough when someone thinks their farts don't stink, but when someone doesn't fart at all...

Grr...there was the coolest link in a topic almost identical to this one, but I can't find it.  It must've been another one about the apparent paradox of elves making things out of wood.  Anyway, it was a link about using living trees to make things like furniture and buildings (in real life).  Does anybody know which topic or link I might be thinking of?  If not, does anyone know a good way to look for links in these forums?

In all the medieval fantasy universes I know of in which elves are such forest protectors, they always create the wood items they need from fallen or dead trees. Or from dead wood lying on the ground.

They live so long, they can wait a little while before finding what they really need. They are the patient type, it seems.
