I had to reset a VR at my job today. Resetting it leads to a screen showing the Meta logo. After seeing the logo for 1 minute, I now felt almost as dirt as I do when watching a swastika for a minute.

People should have felt dirty about Meta along time ago. My friend's acount has been hacked. "Meta" knows this (I feel dirty saying "Meta", its still facebook no matter what BS the marketing/PR team pulls). "Meta" knows this, knew within a day of it happening. Does nothing. His old account is now a scam account selling shit online that never arrives. Meta knows this does not care, does nothing. Over a year later, I can look at his fake account selling scams, that Meta knows about and does nothing and it is still there. Zukerbot may be bowing to Trump, but he was already a worse human being than Trump to begin with.

The UN High Comissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, stated today that removing hateful and harmful content from social media is NOT censorship

Isn't it fun living in a world where words have no meaning?

I'm all for shutting people up who are being hostile assholes, but saying it's not censorship is just wrong. I know it's a tired meme but people just don't understand subtlety any more. "Censorship is bad, so if we have to use a tool to take away people's access to information and that's a good thing, it can't be censorship...."

Censorship can be good or bad; it's the use of it that matters, just like any other tool.

I mean if that's not censorship, what word do you use?

Curation, probably. It's like a children's library refraining from adding a donated collection of the collected works of Donatien Alphonse François to their shelves, or a pre-k escorting someone off when they start trying to reenact one of Carlin's skits on the F-bomb in the middle of recess. Sometime's the place and time just really ain't the place and time, and censorship ain't really the right word for that getting enforced.

Scale can matter, but there's a fairly strong argument that refusing to host someone's speech at any moment under any circumstance really isn't the same as censorship, especially if there's substantial venues for the speech in question to still be published (and gods fuck is there, even if every major social media site got their head out their ass on the subject there'd still be oodles of places to spew hatred to your heart's content). That's extra true if the venue in question is clear ahead of time that, y'know, this ain't the place for that shit, and a lot of social media does exactly that.

Platform owners are allowed to moderate as they see fit. A problem arises however when group A is circumventing the rules and group B is the only group that ever is held to account for the same actions.

A grat example of this is the Steam discussion forums. That is a video game distribution platform, including many competitive online games against other players. One would think it would be of the business's interest to counter things like video game cheating. However Steam has a policy against Naming and Shaming that also applies to cheating. Now, when someone makes a thread about cheating there, it's against Steam terms to post evidence of cheating and users will have their posts removed or possibly be banned. That is why the OP of those threads are always baited into showing proof "or it didn't happen". This oddly enough extends to pointing out that a Steam account is only being used to troll the Steam forums and has no activity other than that. So you see, the rules are actually benefitting those who are not using the services for what they are intended.

As to video game cheating, I didn't start the thread about that, but well, the government doesn't give a shit about that. (EDIT: I noted this is the Euro thread which I forgot when I wrote this, I'm mostly complaining about the rotten US security sector but I'm sure it's applicable in other places as well though I will leave that to the reader to determine) I'll also note they are incompetent and can't defend against cyber intrusions because of the swiss cheese they've made to bypass Constitutional requirements, they oppose reforms that aren't a power grab for themselves and their political extrapartisan faction which doesn't make it much of a reform and more of an entrenchment, and make opponents of the government through leading it astray in their own interests. Why would we expect them to realize the links between black market video game cheating revenue streams and various groups they claim to oppose? It's apparently below their paygrade. It's also international but doesn't have anything to do with green energy manufacturing so doesn't get fucked with through bad advice to sequestered old people.

Censorship isn't a bad thing. Censorship existed in most cultures. The fact that nutjobs in the USA have a philosophy of absolutism when it comes to free speech doesn't mean censorship = bad. In my own culture, world war II memorabilia is restricted There is a bunch of laws restricting the BS that led to world war II. some of the laws maybe questionable, but.. free shit absolutism is toxic beyond believe. No healthy society exists without boundaries.

Indeed. Censorship can be a nescessary tool to combat evil propaganda (or blatant misinformation). Ofcourse, the better tool against that is education, but sadly education mostly focusses on getting kids ready for the job market rather than on getting kids ready for society.

Weird huh? Almost like it preserves this thing you disagree with in case I edit it later. No need pal, let me go ahead and lock it in for you.

Sounds fighty. Not sure whether it is or not, mostly I had a post malfunction.

Probably if we are fighting, you'd have to clue me in about what we are fighting about? Otherwise I'm not sure on what to reply with.

The winds of discord stir, and the keepers of order rise. Those who sow chaos shall vanish, struck by the hammer of silence. Tread lightly, for the reckoning is near.

I think there's some confusion, it looked like you were doing QFT, which could imply you thought Duuvian would edit his post later. I think no one is fighting and it was an honest forum glitch

Meanwhile as the UK drops below 0*C and I'm freezing my nuts off at home, we can't seem to stop NIMBYism torpedoing any attempt at modernising our energy infrastructure. We can't do nuclear, we can't do renewables, what the fuck are we supposed to do?  ::)
