Fishing

Is fishing still broken (I seen to recall fish did not replenish in past versions.)

If it's fixed, Do fishermen require anything particular besides the Fishery workshop?  I've never used it before but "free food" would be nice.

No, they went to Hel, where they lead a bleak existence in cold and darkness. Valhalla is reserved for valiant warriors.

In my limited experience fishing still rapidly depletes the biome of critters, and you end up with enmpty streams and bogs. I've had better luck with ocean-fishing, and can't recall a time when the sea ran out of mollusks.

You can still use it as an early food source. Unless we are talking murky pools, you should have plenty of time to wait for extra migrants and get farms set up/next caravan arrives. iirc, Dorfs only eat twice a season. 100 fish will feed 50 dwarves over 3 months.

Dunno. I've been turning on fishing labour quite a few times on one dwarf for the past 20 fort years, and when I turn it on now, there's still plenty of mussels to be caught.

Yeah, my experience is that pools don't replenish fish, but streams and rivers that flow from off-screen seem to -- at least, I've never noticed running out.

Is this biome reanimating? I really don't want to know what happens when "absurd numbers of megabeasts" is combined with "reanimating biomes".

That's been my recent experience as well.  Lots of mussels and shells to work with.

I had given up on fishing.  So the first winter freeze no longer permanently removes all fish?

Doesn't seem to, at least not for water that flows from off-stream. (I think pools still lose all their fish, and I'm not sure about streams that originate on the embark.)
