Dwarves killing themselves in the tavern?
« on: January 10, 2016, 02:06:54 am »

Does anybody else have dwarves who just drink themselves to death or something? Not only are my dwarves unproductive since the designation of a meeting hall/tavern, they binge drink and cover the entire place in vomit. Literally half the floor tiles are covered in vomit.

Just recently, a dwarf was found dead in the tavern and I highly suspect it was from alcohol abuse. I had no vampires and no hostile creatures or visitors. I doubt he was killed by the roaming kittens or that turkey in the tavern. And I doubt a vampire dwarf would eat another dwarf in public, even if everyone surrounding the vampire is drunk to the point where they vomit all over the place.

On a serious note, is there any way to make my dwarves go back and hang out around their own abodes rather than partying and committing suicide via alcohol?

Alcohol poisoning is a new feature of 42.x.
Only effects over-indulgent inhabitants with no self control, and who wanted them in the fortress anyhow?

Your fortress is self-selecting for alcohol tolerance. The weak must perish.

not using tavern keepers and making sure there's no mugs/goblets or booze in your taverns seems to prevent all those mysterious tavern deaths.

And dwarves don't get stressed about lack of booze if you do that?
Does it just shift deaths to the booze pile, or are people not so overindulgent there?

I have a tavern keeper and plenty of booze (along with a veritable mountain of mugs) and the only death tgus far was a human. No vomiting issues, either.

Disease resistance is also a factor, since the poisoning is a syndrome.

I've only noticed problems with non-dwarves, particularly goblins.

Also, does drinking improve the disease resistance attribute, since alcohol causes a syndrome?

no stress, they grab mugs and drink themselves. They still drink fine, they just don't die without a tavern keeper. I'm not sure if the deaths are caused by alcohol, since no one dies, while they still drink normally without tavern keeper (plus with a tavern keeper, they don't really drink, since the mugs they wear are still filled with booze). I think there's something strange going on the moment that a tavernkeeper decorates a dwarf with a mug, which causes some dwarves to get cyan lungs and heart, and die. Or perhaps, they do get an extra dose of alcohol on top of a regular drink job when served by a barkeeper, which is too much. But then you'd expect the mugs to be empty, and goblins to be less vulnerable, because they don't drink themselves.
And yeah I can confirm that goblins were especially prone to death in tavern.

I think with goblins it's due to their small size, at least in part.  I don't know how their disease resistance compares to other races.  Maybe someone can do a comparison.

Goblins are about the size of an elf aren't they? and elves don't seem to die from alcohol

I've only noticed problems with non-dwarves, particularly goblins.

Code: [Select]
[CREATURE:GOBLIN]
[DESCRIPTION:A medium-sized humanoid driven to cruelty by its evil nature.]
[NAME:goblin:goblins:goblin]
[CASTE_NAME:goblin:goblins:goblin]
[CREATURE_TILE:'g'][COLOR:7:0:0]
[GLOWTILE:'"'][GLOWCOLOR:4:0:1]
[EVIL]
[INTELLIGENT]
[CANOPENDOORS]
[BONECARN][NO_DRINK][NO_EAT]
[PREFSTRING:terrifying features]
[NOCTURNAL]

Code: [Select]
[NO_DRINK]
wut

Did you remove those tags, or are goblins ignoring them to score a buzz? And if that's the case, why aren't dwarf vampires breaking the rules too?
You know, as opposed to being emo bloodsuckers who ruin everything.
Come to think of it, [NOCTURNAL] has never seemed to have any effect on goblin activity either, I catch those suckers up at all hours. When I gave goblins a normal town-based civilization, their taverns would always be empty because [NO_DRINK]. Something is not right here.

elves don't die from alcohol

SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT HERE, SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT HERE AT ALL.

Maybe barkeepers serve them drinks even though they have the [NO_DRINK] flag.

I do see goblins get into fights, but that always causes a combat report.

Goblin personalities lean toward the extremely immoderate. Meaning they overindulge in things. Like getting drunk - which is why they drink themselves to death slightly more often.
The [no_drink] tag just means they don't have to drink to survive - they won't die of thirst. It does not mean they are incapable of drinking for fun. They are completely capable of eating and drinking if they want to - they just don't have to.

I just checked my current fort, which has two goblin permanent residents.  Looking through their recent thoughts there's nothing about alcohol or inebriation.
